Very sad to hear, and condolences to his friends and family.
I wonder about the water safety plan of an event like a mud run compared to a triathlon.

I would suggest that we will see many more injuries and deaths across the spectrum of multisport races and fitness challenge events over the next year or so.Increased enteries in trendy events certainly dosen’t mean that there will be a trend toward training for them adequately.
This guy seems like he was fit but as we have no info on cause of death so it is tough to comment on the safety of this particular event. This guy was definatley taken too soon.Very sad.

Very sad, and probably avoidable with a properly run race. I feel very sorry for his family. Sheezh.
The comments below the article weren’t particularly pleasant to read.
Stick with known races and race directors. That river is a death trap from what I’ve heard.

All discoverable by an attorney too. There will be a lawsuit and those people will be called to testify. Race Director is DONE.
Just wait until they start doing all these “mud runs” during the heat of summer. Contrary to what the organizers say, these events are marketed to people who don’t really want to train. I have a ton of friends who haven’t run a mile in years who are signing up for a couple of these events that are coming locally. I’d wager on large numbers of heat-related injuries.

Exactly!!
Gee guys, lets enter an event that comprises a military assualt course that requires a decent degree of fitness and co-ordination and just to make it harder lets not do any specific training!..While I’m at it, lets imagine that the lame training which I pretended to do by following a combination of Zumba videos and Crossfit advice from my butch neighbour will be enough to deal with being buffeted by a whole gaggle of equally untrained and clueless “athletes”.
Sounds like fun!!!
Thanks for the laugh.
I saw the ropes and ramps in and out of the water. My guess is maybe he wanted to get by some folks on the ropes and dove into the water and tried to swim? Maybe he hit his head on something on the bottom not realizing the depth of the river? Sometimes there is no visibility in those rivers so you can’t see how deep the water is. I guess an autopsy will determine if he hit his head on the bottom. Very sad.
