Moving to the Bay Area/CA - Need recomendations

Hello guys,

In the summer I’ll be moving to CA to work in Cupertino and I appreciate recommendations of where to look for places to live. Priorities are:

  • Great running options for training in road and trails (bike is of less priority for now). Also with a good running community with group runs and clubs.

  • Coming from Boston I really like the young and university vibe.

  • Minimal commute time for work, I can handle 20-30 minutes each way.

Thanks!

Bay Area is perhaps the best place for year-round tri-training you can get! But the huge gotcha is that housing is nuts expensive. I honestly don’t know an affordable place nearby that I could recommend. East San Jose has some almost-affordable housing, but you’ll still pay for it and have a annoying commute.

Trail running is amazing at Rancho San Antonio. Almost every other park you find on Google maps in the area will work as well.

Tons of amazing road rides. Just google Bay Area road rides, and you’ll get most of them. Montebello road in Cupertino is a classic with low car traffic.

Join the Silicon Valley tri club and go to their regular workouts to meet people. It’s def more for newer triathetes, so if you’re fast, you’ll be way in front, but the people are nice and it’s got a lower key vibe as a result.

I lived in Belmont and worked in Palo Alto over 20 years ago. The training and racing was excellent. Lots of trails both paved and not for running and just a short distance to the west was great riding. Flats, hills, whatever you wanted.
Prices are crazy though.

I would suggest living in Cupertino.

Car break in is crazy nowadays. DO NOT leave your bike in your car or on the rack, ever!
South bay is nice if you can afford it.

A lot will depend on how much you want to pay in the crazy Bay Area market, and 20-30min. commute will limit your options given the traffic on the peninsula. I would look at Los Altos and Los Gatos. The riding/running is great, though you don’t get the college town vibes. The closest you get for college vibes is Menlo/Palo Alto (note: East Palo Alto is very different than Palo Alto; different communities), though it’s not close to the scene in Boston.

Background: I moved to Menlo Park after grad school in Boston.

Los Gatos is really nice. There are really good cycling roads if you ride south, towards Morgan Hill. A lot of people also ride north from Los Gatos, up towards Saratoga.
The Los Gatos Creek Trail is great for running. It’s about 12 miles in length. So end to end you can get in close to a full marathon.
There are good spots for trail running nearby. Almaden Quicksilver is great. Woodside. You can drive 45 minutes to Santa Cruz for more trails and open water swimming.

I’d suggest Menlo Park, Palo Alto, or Los Altos.

You’ll get more restaurants, shopping, and a university vibe due to Stanford proximity.

Portola Valley and similar areas nearby are an easy drive to amazing trails for gravel and trail running. Really nice road bike riding in the area, too.

Have you seen the real estate prices in all those areas?

Seriously, a $3 million dollar home is on the slightly low side for all three of those areas. Just zillow it - you’ll see.

I was a missionary in the Bay Area from 1998-2000. So, I am way out of the loop on things, but am following along because I like to see she how current ST suggestions compare to what I experienced when I was there. The furthest south I lived was Redwood City. When I was in Redwood City I worked in San Mateo, Palo Alto, and East Palo Alto. I will second that when I was there East Palo Alto and Palo Alto were different communities. My uncle has biked Hwy 1 from Canada to Mexico multiple times. The only cycling I did when I was there was in-town for commuting. The only running I did when I was there was on 400m tracks. Good luck.

Not replying to you specific, but to everyone who came here to help.

Thank you very much! I know that prices are CRAZY CRAZY, let’s see what I’ll be able to do. I comeback here in a couple of months for updates!

I live in Portola Valley. Very familiar… $3M is a tear down here as that’s really just lot value.

That said, trails and roads for running and bikes are great in this area. It’s easy to drive to the trailheads or to the best bike roads (e.g., Tunitas Creek).

For new homeowners as well, buying is even tougher, as home insurance in places near the forest like Portola Valley are now either terribly expensive or completely uninsurable - which you will need to get a mortgage. Lovely area, though!

Redwood City is a good bet for the OP. There are apts to be had that are ‘almost’ reasonably priced there, and it’s not far from Cupertino and you are still right in the heart of all the good bike-run (possibly swim) stuff.
