Moving to Madison, WI + any thoughts on Epic Systems

I just recieved an offer to work for Epic Systems in Verona and would love to live in Madison. I’m wondering if any of you folks have experience with the company and have any recommendations on where to live, as I don’t have much of an idea of how long it takes to get around in the Madison metro area.

Thanks!

I think that Epic Systems is owned by a cycling nut. As far as where to live what are your stats. 24, single, likes to go out, live downtown. If you are older and more settled I would live somewhere on the Ironman course in between Middleton and Verona. When I move back I have promised my wife to buy a house in the Frank LLoyd Wright Simulated neighborhood in Middleton. Very cool if you are into that sort of thing.

Hope this helps.

I grew up and am currently living in Madtown. AWESOME place, if you decide to move here let me know and I can help direct you.

As far as Epic, 60+ hours per week is the standard I have seen. Good pay, good benefits and a cool facility…only problem is they seem to work their employees into the ground, until they quit. That is just what I have heard from a few project managers. They treat you well, you love the job at first…then things can change. However, IF you are looking for a place to start your career and are young/single it could be a great move.

Hope this helps!

Blake

the position would be in project management, can you recall how long it took your friends to kind of burn out on it? I’m young and need some experience and figured this would be a nice way to start a career and kind of work at 100mph until i run out of energy for it.

i’m kind of wondering about masters swim teams in the area too, since i would most like to swim when time is crunched.

thanks!

I work at Epic. Sent you a PM.

One of my best friends worked at Epic before they moved to Verona. He expressed a lot of the same sentiments that Blake did. I think you tend to hear a lot of complaints about all large corporations though.

As for where to live, I personally would stear clear of Verona (small town). I’d check out the Hilldale neighborhood, it’s crazy happenin’ now and a straight shot to Verona down Midvale Blvd./Verona Rd.

I have heard about a lot of master’s groups. I can think of 3 off the top of my head.

I grew up in Madison and think it’s a great place to raise a family or go to school. Being single is a different story. I’ve had several friends get frustrated with the dating scene that is usually students or divorcees. The great news is that there are plenty of places to go out that aren’t very “student” (Great Dane, Jenna’s, etc.). I’d recommend near east side or near west side. The Hilldale area is pretty cool as mentioned before. I preferred living on the Isthmus just for running routes. If you’re a triathlete (or runner/cycling), you’re probably OK socially as the scene is really good in Madison. Trust me, I’d much rather live in Madison, than Dallas, Atlanta, Fargo, uuhhhh (I’m biased) and nothing against the folks that live there, you probably like where you live…

Hey all,

I was just searching around for information regarding epic and the time commitment with regards to continuing my own training if I were to work there. Any information you might know would be greatly appreciated! Sorry for reviving a dead thread.

The long hours at epic will be overshadowed by the awesomeness that is Madison.

I’ve heard you get 1 month sabatical paid for after working 5 years.

before folks recommend a straight shot in on Verona RD/151 be aware it will be under major reconstruction for a few years beginning in a year of 2. can check online at wisdot site to get current info, but it is already a cluster at the beltline ad verona rd and it will get much worse before it gets better. i think it is a 4 or 5 years phased construction project.

this is my only input as far as where to live.

when X and i moved back we decided we needed to be somehwta near the lakes, otherwise it might just as well be des moines, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Agree with Blakebeck.

Former co-worker took a job there. Great pay, benefits, and everything. Problem is expect to be working yourself silly 60+ hours a week. He is a project manager if that helps.

I live within a stone’s throw of Epic (literally… I see their construction cranes as I type this) and have several friends that work for Epic. You will work ridiculous hours, and you will be challenged. Your social life will often come second (or third) to work. Verona is a fairly active community, although there isn’t much to do in Verona proper.

I would recommend against living in the Hilldale area, as Verona Road/151 south is about the absolute worst in terms of traffic around the Madison area. It quite honestly takes me 45 minutes on most nights to get from my house to the Beltline if I take Verona Road… it’s awful. Middleton, far western Madison (along Junction Road, Old Sauk, or University west) or somewhere along Hwy M between Madison and Verona would be my recommendation. If you’re looking for an apartment and don’t have pets, Hawk’s Ridge might be worth consideration.

Having lived in Madison for all of my life, then moving away for 10 years, and then returning, I must admit that Madison isn’t as great as it once was. The drivers suck, the restaurants have slipped a bit, and the general vibe isn’t quite as cool as it previously was. That said, it’s still better than most big cities - relatively low crime and plenty of activity. Just watch out for drivers, as most of them harbor some serious hatred for cyclists.

Masters swimming? Join the Middleton-Cross Plains high school swimming program ($140/year) and then talk to Justin Pernitz about signing-up for his masters class. It’s great.

@mhemberg
The neighborhood you’re talking about is “Middleton Hills” - I lived there for a few years… super expensive property taxes and homes… a 2500-2800 square foot home will run above and beyond $400K and your taxes will exceed $7k/year. You won’t have a yard to speak of, either. While it’s a nice neighborhood, you can get a lot more for a lot less if you look elsewhere.
