Moving to Langley, BC

I’m moving to Langley, British Columbia in July. I’m new to province and Langley. I’ve searched some clubs and pools to train. But I thought I should ask to everyone here where to train.

Pool Swim: I swim 4 times a week. I need a pool access around 20-25 minute radius by car. Of course, closer is better. Not sure which pools I should look.

Open water: No clue where to go. I’m happy to join a group. Open to any suggestions.

Riding: I mostly ride in doors. I only get out for long rides or recovery/easy rides. Any place to ride out from Langley? Perhaps I can join a group rides or cycling club. Any suggestions?

Run: I will have a treadmill for my all runs except a long run. I’m not sure any pathways or trails at Langley.

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on the move!

Lots of interesting & safe training opportunities near you.

I’m a coach with a local (Abbotsford) tri club Abbotsford Triathlon Club – Swim Farther, Ride Harder, Run Faster (abbytriclub.com)

Depending on where you live there are quite a few swimming places, the local gem is the pool in Walnut Grove, you’ll wanna Google that.

Lots of good riding within 5 minutes of almost anywhere in Langley, for example 0 avenue goes right on the Can/USA border and is a nice mix of flat and hills.

Campbell Valley has some neat trails for running.

You can also check out our lively FB page for info as well.

Depending on where you are in Langley it should be pretty easy to bike south down to 0 Ave at the border then you can go west all the way to White Rock or east to Abbotsford and anywhere in between. Very popular route with lots of cyclists. Grew up in White Rock, so this is the default bike route when I’m back there. Not sure about open water in Langley, but can definitely hit up some of the beaches in White Rock or Vancouver, though the water will be legit cold most of the year.

Welcome to BC!

When you get bored of riding your indoor trainer come on out to the Burnaby Velodrome for some real indoor riding and racing. Your new home will likely be 1/2 hour to 45 minuets drive away.

Lived in south surrey for 15 years just down the road

  • Walnut grove pool is your friend
  • 0 Ave to cultus lake is an amazing ironman training ride
  • running routes like fort langley and Campbell valley

Open water you’ll struggle though. I would go to Sasamat lake from here but a good 40 min drive at 5am

Thanks everyone. That was what I need it.

Pool swim - Walnut Grove is the place.

Open water - White Rock is not far to explore for open water swim options.

Biking - Sound along the O avenue, east to west great options. I may join a cycling club as well for competitive riding

Running - Campbell Valley seems nice. I won’t be too far from it.

I have to tried it if tri bikes are and not good handling skills are allowed

A lot of spring road races in the area as well, thanks to a local club called Escape Velocity.

Thanks to our climate, we staert the race season early!

I live in Fort Langley

it hasn’t really had much to do this year - but Penninsula Multisport is the closest tri group (unless you go out to the valley or into the city). Their pool was the Grandview heights one in South Surrey and most of their rides started in south surrey (but thats only a 20 minute drive away). They had swims in the morning twice a week and meet at sasamat sometimes in the summer I think.

In the time before - I swam lots with the masters at Walnut Grove pool. Its not very competitive and usually a pretty good mix of people. No idea when thats going to start again. Not much in the way of coaching, but its like 5 minutes from my house and a pretty nice pool.

Biking: Glen Valley is a great place - lots of loops and routes you can do out towards Abbotsford, with not too bad traffic and usually decent shoulders. Ive never ridden with any of the roadie groups - but I see the United Velo trains out there all the time. Lots of people come from the rest of surrey and langley to ride in glen valley (usually followed by a coffee or beer in fort langley). Like others have said 0 ave is good - but Im usually too lazy to drive/ride somewhere first.

For lake swimming, you are also not too far from

Rolley LakeAlbert Dyck ParkCultus Lake
Maybe take your bike or running shoes and make a morning/afternoon of it.

I swim in Whonnock, but it ain’t for everyone.
