I just got a job at the National Cancer Insitute and will be moving near the Bethesda area in July. I have been spoiled in NYC with an awesome cycling and swim team to train with. Does anyone have suggestions about who to train with in the DC/MD area?
I’m on the other side in Northern VA, the roads suck for cycling (no shoulder, high traffic area) but in general Maryland is better. For running/cycling you have the Tow path and the Capital Cressent trail, for mountains check out Skyland drive in Virginia.
congrats on your new gig. Post-doc? I seem to recall there’s a really good female tri pro that is also a post-doc at NIH, or at least she was a few years ago. Being one myself (just moved from DC to Boston), I dunno how they do it. you’re certainly busy. anyways.
There is a relatively new DC tri club. I have some friends there, they seem pretty nice as a group.
Roadies, I can help you more with. My favorite road club is hands down Squadra Coppi. they are based in Northern VA, but there’s a bunch of DC residents on the team. Very friendly. DC Velo also has some good guys (plus they’re sponsored by Time and Zipp iirc!)
The DC Velo web site dcvelo.com has some group rides listed, and the squadracoppi.com one has some as well i think. Not sure if it’s published, but Rock Creek park (nat’l park w/in DC) features the Tue/Thu night (6 or 6.30 from Peirce Mill, can’t remember) ‘goon ride’ which is basically race-pace training with several optional climbs. Nobody waits.
potomac pedallers are a touring club but don’t let the name fool you, they can put the hammer down (no personal experience, but a fast friend of mine used to ride with them), and they are great for newbies b/c they do the ‘classic’ tours, eg, skyline drive, w/ cue sheet, and you don’t need to worry about getting lost.
You’re also relatively close to the Wednesday night Greenbelt crit series if you’re interested. Very well run race.
let me know if you need anything else. good luck and welcome to dc!
