Moving from the Brooks T7 to something for a marathon. Any suggestions?

I’ve been running in the Brooks T7 and I need a shoe that will be a little more suitable for the longer mileage. Any suggestions?

Brooks Racer ST5 should be exactly what you’re looking for. I’ve been running long distances with that shoe for two years now and absolutely love it

agreed with the STRacer 5 OR try the brooks launch
.

I’ll chime in with the ST5 and Launch as well. I will also add the Cadence2 (if you want or need stablity) and the Flow2. The Connect is awesome, I’ve raced a stand alone 13.1 in them but have tried to go further…yet.

Awesome thanks. I guess Brooks would be the obvious choice. Is the toe box similar to the T7?

I’d recommend the ST5 or the Pure Connect. I wear the Pure Connect for all my Ironman races. If you want a little more cushioning then you could also try the Pure Flow or the Launch. I tend to use the Pure Flow and Launch for longer runs in training. I think the Launch has more cushioining than the Flow, but they are both great shoes.

i run in T7, ST racer 5, launch, green silence, cascadias (if you can’t tell, i really like brooks). i find the T7 to be the narrowest shoe of the bunch. My favorite shoe is the green silence but i have not done more than a 1/2 in them. extremely light and closest to T7 of the shoes listed. still light but a bit more supportive for longer distance i switch to the STR5. for the long slow runs i go for the launch. have done a marathon in both STR5 and Launch and both were great but for me, i weigh a bit more and prefer the launch for the long stuff. i liked the pure line but didn’t love them and stayed away.
generally for me T7=treadmill, greensilence=races up to 15k, STR5=15k to 1/2, Launch=marathon. but again, that is just what works for me. ive been running in them all for 4 years

Launch toe box is much wider than the T7. The Launch is awesome marathon shoe and have worn them in my last 3 marathons with nodda an issue.

Awesome thanks. I guess Brooks would be the obvious choice. Is the toe box similar to the T7?
I run in T7 for quick runs and 10K under they are great. The ST5 is similar but fit wise the PureConnect feels identical. It’s a great all around shoe just doesn’t et miles (last as long) as the ST5

The Launch!!!

Quick bump.

I tried out some Asics because they said they had a similar profile to the T7/Launch. Didn’t work out because the heel was to loose. So now I’m about to try out the Launch.

For those that got the launch. How is it specifically compared to the T7? Is it just as narrow/tight in the heel with extra room in the toe box?

I’m a Saucony guy, through and through, but I feel the need to chime in on this Brooks-fest.
If someone is having success in a T7 (NEUTRAL), why are most of your recommendations for the Racer ST (STABILITY)? You’re either in the T7/Connect, or you jump to the Flow for more meat under your foot. The Launch was discontinued and pseudo-replaced with the Flow. If someone is Neutral, putting a posted shoe under their foot will not only feel totally unnatural, but it will almost certainly end with injury.

I disagree and don’t think that’s necessarily true. Los of stability shoes aren’t super posted and can work just fine for neutral runners for longer distances. The connect from the mizuno wave universe to the ronin is an example.

I will give you this one concession: If a runner is biomechanically efficient and a forefoot runner, they can get away with a stability shoe or a neutral shoe. Otherwise, there is a big difference. The simple physics of putting a denser block under the medial arch will lead to the foot being pushed further to the lateral side of the shoe. Universally recognized biomechanics studies have revealed that the navicular bone fatigues and drops on average of 5mm over a 13.1 race (open). That means the navicular will come into harsher contact with that post as the body fatigues, thus forcing it harder to the lateral side. And that is just a 13.1, not talking about a full Iron shoe (with the additional fatigue of swimming & cycling before). So, if you are smart, there is quite a bit of difference between the two.

I can’t really understand what you’re trying to say, but you are using two neutral racers (Ronin & Universe) in your example. There is no posting in either shoe. Stability racers aren’t “super posted”, because it’s already a more efficient foot strike. But taking into account the fatigue when you start vs when you finish, that little bit of posting will have more of an impact as the race goes on.
What do you consider a stability shoe?

I always considered the Ronin a stability shoe. Zoot tempo from the ultra race too.

I’m a weird duck though with a somewhat efficient flipper.

Well. Not a single place had the Launch.

I’ll be trying out the Zoot Kalani 3.0, which has a similar profile to the T7.

I’m a brooks guy to0— t7’s for halfs and pure cadence 2 for fulls.

I’m too late, but was doing research on the same issue. A lot of stores are having issues keeping the Launch in because it was discontinued and then brought back due to demand. Online is the only way to go if you feel comfortable with that route. http://www.brooksrunning.com/Brooks-Launch-Mens-Lightweight-Trainer/1100651D007.080,default,pd.html?start=7&cgid=mens-runningshoes-neutral and they do free shipping and free returns, even if you wear them. I picked some up, tried them for a couple weeks knowing I could return them but am sold on them. The drop is a bit higher, but for a high mileage trainer or marathon shoe it should work out nicely for you. Running Warehouse may have other colors if the Brooks site is out of the one you like best.

I have the T7 and Launch, and I find them not even remotely similar when it comes to fit. The Launch toe box is much wider and it is on a straight last. The T7 is very narrow with a curved last.

But, most Brooks fans love their Launch (not often an internet petition can bring a shoe back from the dead) so I would say give it a try if you can find them. Personally I found the Launch had too much cushioning for my liking. Compared to the T7 its like running on pillows.

I found a local running store that had the launch in stock and bought them. Oh man they are awesome. They are different than the t7s, but they were everything I needed. Second run in them was 20 miles and it was great. The wider toe box and cushion was perfect. Definitely more support than I’m used too.
