So I just bought a Garmin Edge 500. The magnet that comes with the speed sensor is a spoke magnet. I guess I need to order a magnet without the little prong in the back. I want to mount it on a Hed 3. Has anyone done this? What kind of magnet will work with the Garmin speed sensor, or doesn’t it matter? What kind of glue do you use on the surface of the Hed 3? I’m thinking that some kinds of glue may corrode the surface of the wheel.
Thanks for your help with this.

I’ve done this twice over the years. Take any wheel type magnet and hacksaw off the casing/shell. Take the bare magnet itself and simply tape it to your wheel w/ black electrical tape. You can also epoxy it.
Go to the hardware store and buy the smallest rare earth magnet that they have. (Rare earth magnets are very strong, so don’t worry about the size.)
Put a small square of black electrical tape on your wheel where the magnet should go.
Super glue the magnet to the electrical tape.
Now, you can remove the magnet any time you want.
unless you are riding your hed 3s on the trainer why would you even need it. The Garmin is a GPS and can desiplay seeped with out it. The only reason I use it is for the trainer.
Thanks, guys. I esp. like the idea of super-glue on top of the electrician’s tape laid on the wheel. Brilliant and simple. I had no idea they sold “rare earth” magnets at the hardware store. Learn something new every day.
The guys at the shop said that a speed sensor would be more accurate than the GPS function by itself. Also, with the Garmin integrated sensor I can monitor cadence.

You can also stick a rare earth magnet to the backside of your pedal spindle instead of putting a magnet on your crankarm. Much cleaner look.
