Mountain Biking in Hawaii

Trying to get a feeler for what’s out there. Based on my research, it appears as though there is essentially zero mountain biking trails in Kona, HI. Is that correct based on anyone’s best knowledge?

Also, I’m curious as to how many trails are in Maui? Obviously the XTERRA WC takes place there, but are there other options as well?

For reference, if anyone wants a great app to use on your phone in your quest for primo trails TrailForks is pretty solid. You can download regions and then use GPS to position yourself on the downloaded maps (so even if you don’t have cell service you can figure out where you are). Especially useful in some of the more confusing trails in Western NC.

Thanks in advance for any info!

I dont have any first-hand experience, but I would sort of guess on the Big Island there would be more of that on the Hilo side.

there are trails on kona side. they are up high above holualoa on the high road and more down near kealakekua. none are legitimate trails and you wont find them on a map or online (at least last time i was looking for them). The guys at the bike shop will give you a shit eating grin if you ask about them.

Does the new Xterra course take place on private property like the old one or is it always open?

It’s always open. My parents live right below the new west Maui course on Kapalua bay. We walk the trails when I get out there to be with them.

Tons of options for mountain bikes on Maui.

Yea I was looking at VRBO’s near where you mention your parents living (actually I think west of there where the options are a bit cheaper) for Maui. Would also be in Kona on from October 1-11th or thereabouts. Then going to Maui, maybe.

In a pipe dream world anyway.
