Does anyone have any idea what the most popular pedals are for triathalon use? What is everyones guess on the #1 pedal in Kona? Just curious.
Speedplay, Look Keo, and shimano are the most popular.
Keywins look awfully nice as well.

my vote for Speedplay. I rode on old-school time pedals for 20 years, then switched to speedplay and haven’t looked back. Great (and lite) pedals.
As for your question about Kona, wasn’t it slowtwitch, or maybe it was Lava that had counts of all the gear in Kona?
If popular means “most frequently sold” I’d suggest Look and Shimano.
shimano 105 pedals
.
Here is the data from 2008 kona:
Pedals
LOOK – 678
Shimano – 499
Speedplay – 370
Time – 119
Keewin – 18
Wellgo – 17
Ritchey – 5
Crank Bros. – 4
Aerolite – 2
Burns my ass that LOOK is at the top there. In the pro peloton Speedplay is very well represented.
But I am second guessing my love of Speedplay after reading this thread on Weight Weenies:

In the retail distributorship Look is better represented, and that is why they have an edge. They also have a historical head start. It’s easier for consumers to find Look pedals at more retailers than Speedplay. As you already know, it doesn’t suggest the better system though…
I would say tthat Speedplay is the most popular pedal. You have to factor in all the OEM pedals that go out on bikes, and there are your top two on the list. Speedplay is mostly an aftermarket pedal, so to have that many tells you a lot about how much people like them and how popular they are. Let’s face it, most people will take whatever pedal `comes with their bike, and it has to be a pretty good product to trash those, and spend 100’s of dollars on something just a little different…
Disclaimer: I have been riding Speedplays since they were first introduced. I have ridden almost all the others at one time or another, and thus far nothing has struck me as better.
In all of the bike shops i have been in from texas-kansas-arkansas and up north i tend to always see large look displays over speedplay. Now i for one like look over speedplay, but that it probably because i have been using look pedals for the last three years. Most of the triathletes in my riding group have look and many of the roadies have speedplay. Makes sense for stopping purposes and clipping back in all the time. Also, do you ever see speedplay pedals on a stock bike? Rarely. Most either have no pedals or look/Shimano.
Hijack re: speedplays. Need a new pair of pedals, was thinking of speedplays. Has anyone ever had an issue with the cleats gunking up in transition when running through a muddy, grassy etc. TZ? Assuming you don’t leave them on the pedals of course. My only hesitancy is trying to clip in and not being able to…
In SE VA most triathletes are using Speedplay. I alternate between roadie and triathlete and have always used Look pedals, though I’m on the very similar Ultegra pedal currently. I did ride Speedplay for a season or two in the mid-90s, but only on my tri bike. Road bike stayed Look.
whatever people get paid to use…
For anyone thinking about getting a set of Speedplay pedals:

I used to ride Speedplay, glad I sold them and ride Time on all my bikes. Unbelievable!
