I am getting tired of having to buy new shoes every other months now because the outsole wears out. I used to need 3 pairs a year, and I am creeping toward 5-6 now. I could understand if the body of the shoe fall apart since I am now running in lighter shoes, but the outsole goes south even earlier. I am running in these new shoes for 5 weeks now and I went through the outsole at the top of the shoe. The rest will follow soon. And I’m not running Kenyan miles either.
So, what brand makes the most durable outsole/use the most durable rubber? I think I can find a shoe I can run in on most brands now.
I put 800 miles on my Saucony Hurricanes before I get a new pair and they show no wear at all. I currently have on 2yo Hurricanes (wear them to work in) and the soles look almost new.
Yeah, I just got off Saucony. Good shoes, but the upper teared after a couple of month, and so was the outsole.
Asics, I agree, they “seem” to last long and might have to go back to them. Or at least that was true a few years ago but the construction nowadays seems to be subpar like the others. I just have a hard time doling out so much money for a pair of shoes. I just can’t stomach paying over $100 for a pair of shoes that last less than 2 months.
So far the shoe goo seems to be the ticket. Can’t they make some shoe using tire rubber!?
Without getting into a dissertation on the durability of shoes and running style, I have to ask what kind of running you’re doing (volume, intensity, terrain) and what your threshold is for the death of a shoe?
I run primarily in lightweight racers and trainers on hard surfaces. I’ve never gotten less than 500 miles out of any running shoe, with a select few exceptions that died under extreme circumstances. Even when I rotate shoes out, they’re still good enough to wear for everyday use.

Saucony did just that in the late 80’s, early 90’s - even had “Goodyear” imprinted on the bottom of the original Saucony Jazz model. But, that type of rubber is very heavy and current trend is to much lighter shoes.
Mostly concrete, 60-70miles/week. It varies. I know a shoe is dead when I get these very particular pains in my legs/ankles (around joints). Hard to explain, but if I change shoes then the pain goes. At least, that was true until a few years ago, now the outsole wears out before I have a chance to reach the pain threshold.
As far as wearing them everyday, that also used to be the case for me until companies decided that flashy neon colors were it. I am slightly self conscious when going out with yellow/neon green shoes.
Not Brooks adrenaline or ravenna. I love the shoes but the forefoot is just about devoid of tread after 250-300 miles. Unlike the asics I wore that would be complete shot but the outersole would be like new
no way with asics!!! i have the same problem. i blaze through a pair of shoes in 140 miles…all these companies going with blown rubber isnt helping …especially those of us who run on our toes ( forefoot). i sent a pair of asics back that had 5 weeks on them and they sent me a new pair in a different model. am i crazy or should a pair of 130 dollar shoes not be worn down thru both of the rubber on the forefoot after 3 or 4 weeks. i do not drag or scrape either. so…dont bother with the asics. ive heard that k swiss k ona c has a better rubber that is more durable. gonna try them
If you’re running 60-70 a week and going through 5-6 pairs a year, that’s really not that bad. 2 months of 60 miles is 480 miles. Especially since you wear a light weight shoe, I’m wouldn’t complain too much about it.
You’re right - nowadays, the shoe bottoms are so durable and tough that they easily outlast the upper (what I think you’re calling the outsole.)
Fortunately though, the outsole/upper should last very, very long as well. 5 weeks is definitely wayyy too short for the lifetime of an upper. If you’re wearing through it that fast, you need to check your shoe fit or how tight you’re making the shoe - that’s pretty bizarre even at 100mpw, to wear a hole right through the upper fabric of the shoe.
If it’s more of a minor comfort change issue, that would make more sense - you would just have to accept the fact that the fabric gets a bit more lax with more use but is still totally functional after 5 wks. (I have a pair of brooks that are 1 year old, with about 30mpw on them every week, and while dirt-encrusted, they’re still going strong.)

+1
Everyone wants lightweight shoes that offer x amount of stability and will last for 1000 miles… for under $100. Not possible.
Just figure you’re paying 20 cents per mile to run in the shoes. Not bad.
As i understand it… carbon rubber (only black) is much more durable than blown rubber (lighter, softer and more grip and can be any color). Get someone that knows to look at the wear pattern since it might be something that orthotics can fix too
