What item in a convenience store has the most “bang for the buck” in terms of calories? I am going for a very long ride this Friday and am preparing for a bonk.

Great question! I know you can get a 64 oz. fountain drink coke for about $1.50 or so. This is probably about 750-800 calories but really hard to carry w/ you…maybe chug it all at once?
Coke Big Gulp
130 grams of carbs in 40 ounces of that good stuff
Plus, no fat to slow down absorption, and the water will hydrate.
Mmmmmmm High fructose corn syrup…

Definately agree.
Most of my long ride include a stop at a gas station for a bottle of coke and a package of peanut butter twix.
A pound of butter I’d imagine. I’m not sure I’d recommend it as an “on the road snack” though.
I read a sports nutrition article recently that an “Oh Henry” bar offers as much nutrition as any of the designer power bars. Not surprised considering the peanuts, etc.
I’ve found that Nutty Bars and a coke work well for me in a pinch. They’re cheap and pretty high in calories.
Definately agree.

Amen brother. You are right that there is absolutely nothing better than an ice cold coke and a peanut butter twix in the middle of a long ride. I almost never buy them unless I’m really bonked out and desperate but there is this tiny country store on one of my common routes and it just so happens to carry P-nut butter twix…there has been more than one ride when the goal of reaching that store is the only thing that kept my pedals turning
This is your answer right here my friend.
Lil Debbies. You can get a box for a bit more than a buck and it is more than a 1000 cals…
I am a big fan of a Mrs. Bairds chocolate pie and a Redbull (large can).
I suspect that my heart is going to explode one day.
Those little chocolate frosted chocolate brownies cost about 25 cents and have over 350 calories. Man do they go down easy!

i turn to hostess pies, donuts, and chocolate milk for my long rides up on the peak 2 peak hwy. all for under $5.

Now that’s funny!
Lots of great suggestions in this post! My mouth is water at the thought of all of them…except the tub of butter I guess.
I agree w/ this but not so practical for an on the bike snack. I recall a winter race where one is required to finish the event with 3,000 calories on their person and they mention that an easy way to meet this requirement is to simply carry a pound or so of butter.
HAHA.
Somedays the thought of that twix 3 hours in is the only thing that gets me rolling!
My favorite gas station snacks are Chocolate Moonpies and Fig Newtons. One time when I was hurting really bad I got this Toll House cookie icecream sandwich that was like 600 calories. It was amazing!
A medium size peanut butter jar has 3000 calories and tastes a lot better than that butter.
I guess the question should be what item has the most USEFUL calories/dollar for a triathlete during a ride. And the answer should be anykind of chocolate. I’d go with Snickers.
Jodi,
Agreed. When my tank starts to run low on a long ride, I typically grab a can of Coke if I can find one. Quick. Cheap. Mucho calories. Can carry it in a back pocket( un-opened) or just dump it into a water bottle( helps de-fizz a bit). Caffiene gives a bit of added kick as well.
