Mortons Nueroma Update

It’s been a week since my first cortisone injection. I’m also taking a prescription of Naproxen 500mg Time Release taken twice daily. I’m attempting to ice the bottom and top of the foot nightly and I’ve cut holes in my insoles to relieve the pressure point on the bottom of my foot. I passed on the ART sessions.

Seems as though the inflammation has reduced considerably, therefore reducing the pain… Still feel a little tweak, but nothing like I did a week ago. I’m scheduled for another cortisone injection next Monday (Dr. would have liked to do it today, but I’m traveling out of state for work.)

For you podiatricies out there:

My Dr. mentioned to me that there maybe scar tissue surrounding the nerve. The cortisone injections will assist in breaking up that scar tissue. Does this make sense? Also, I’ve stopped going to the chiropractor because I figured his sessions were really only creating more inflammation to the site rather then helping the situation. However, do you think have additional ART sessions done now that the inflammation has subsided would be beneficial? What expectations should I be setting for myself as a return to running again.

By strict definition, a “Morton’s neuroma” (simple named by who “discovered” it) is perineural fibrosis, or a thickening/scarring of the sheath that surrounds the nerve. When I remove these surgically, the nerve is HUGE (about the size of my ring finger) from the chronic irritation.

The cortisone injections are an important first step to reduce the inflammation around the nerve. As far as “breaking up” the scar tissue, that is debateable - but he/she probably told you this so you understand the treatment “concept”

You will get back to running with this, rest assured. I would not go to the Chiro with this though as their mechanical manipulation of the foot or whatever they do will likely aggravate the nerve more. Everything else you are doing seems to make sense (depending upon your biomechanics and reason for the neuroma in the first place)

Good luck!
