Over the last 12 months my ex-training partner has become a tool. He has improved his race times dramatically and his head has grown just as fast. Add to the mix his b*tch girlfriend and the two of them are insufferable. They’re conversation is always negative and pessimistic and being around them is like being beaten to death with spoons. Hence he’s my EX and I avoid them at all costs. Whenever they show up at group rides, they’re always critiquing other people’s equipment and being snotty and snickery like no one in the world is allowed to have nice aerobars, expensive shoes, or God forbid a carbon crank. He is very fast, 22-25mph in an Olympic distance tri, she is not, 16-18mph.
Today I roll into the meeting area and everyone is gathering around her bike looking at her new $240 HED Flip-Light Carbon Clip-Ons. Not only are the extensions jammed in backwards, they didn’t bother to fit her position with them and cut the extensions to length. So she is laid out in this terrible aero position where she can hardly control the bike, breath properly, or generate any power. This is the same woman who crashed her bike less than a week ago by clipping the back wheel of the rider in front of her.
I didn’t say a thing; just stared in amazement at their hypocrisy. Atleast when other riders or I spend $200 or $2 on new equipment we bother to install and use it correctly. The scene made my day because never again will their arrogance or belittling ruin a ride for anyone.
There are two types of people in this world - those who lead genuine, authentic lives and those who don’t.
The people in the latter group are usually wasy to spot, no matter how hard they try.
It also helps to laugh at them once in a while.

"He is very fast, 22-25mph "
yawn, … Ironman pace?
have him show up and race a local roadie TT, that will make him a bit more humble, he will see the 50 yr old roadies who average 27+ MPH for a 20k TT
May I introduce you to Mr Tom Demerly, hehehehehehehe

Please, get over yourself. This dude may be a tool but 22-25 (that’s a big range) is very respectable for an Olympic distance. Big difference BTW between a 20k TT and a 40K big leg with a run after it.
that’s a big range
not if they live close to the mountains, since you could easily have completely flat Olys (25mph) and rollery/hilly ones (22mph).
Although I understand the sentiment…you do realize you are engaging in very similar conduct by tearing them down with this post…even if it is sort of anonymous…
The harder it is to just let something go…the better it usually is to do so…
Don’t let these things get to you…as Tom said…its typical…it won’t be the last time…
He is very fast, 22-25mph in an Olympic distance tri,
I have to agree, that isnt that fast, I was only a halfway decent cyclist in triathlon and I usually split about 1 hour give or take a minute or so for a 40K. I remember that didnt even crack the top 20 in my age group at a race like Memphis in May or Chicago Tri.
I believe you have answered your own statement by referring to your training partner as an “ex.”
To even flirt with pessimism only enhances their standing within your mind (albeit already low). Put ‘blinders’ on if you must, just like a horse.
Ignore and move on. You will be the better person in the end.
Bienvenutti…
