i performed an experiment yesterday. my future wife raced on clinchers. two weeks ago, renn kaiser tubular disc with tufo jet special at 120 psi. winning womans split for the 25 miles was 1.06.06. the wife went 1.06.18. yesterday the same girl won with a 48.30 bike split for the 18 miles. the wife went 48.24 riding a renn kaiser clincher disc with a michelin pro race 2 at 115 psi. her race instructions for both races were, go hard in the swim and very hard on the bike and see what happens on the run. we are getting her ready for nat’s. take this information for what it is worth.
Here’s what I get from it:
-
Frank’s girlfriend is fast!
-
Renn disc’s rock!
-
Clinchers rule!
Cast aside your tubies and come over to the dark side!
The “girl” ate a burrito that disagreed with her the night before the race.
something to add. both of these girls are very sensitive of the pack riding and stay far away. i think all the faster women have the same problem. they pass a lot of men and quite a few of them speed up when they are going by or if they don’t speed up when they are passing they make a big effort to stay with them and pass them back. this puts them in danger of penalty and they want no part of it. the girlfriend was talking smack with a guy friend before the race. two weeks ago when she went by him he sped up and said, “i’m gonna make you earn it”. she then dropped is butt. this weekend he was talking this and that so she told him that WHEN i pass you just accept it. good stuff.
All the good women have that problem; men speeding up to keep from getting passed only to die eventually and the bigger one of men passing and then slowing down. Come on guys give the girls a break. It's no disgrace to get passed by a faster woman. In fact it really improves your view.
Frank, are you likely to do any more scientific testing on your wheels? I’m having to make the big tubie/clincher decision soon.
J.
I’ll tell you what I take from all of that Frank… you’re getting married, congrats, when is the date? I’ll see you at Nats in August.
You know the rules,
No pic, The future wife doesnt exist ;-))))))))
.
Not sure who here spins with clinchers vs. tubulars, but with tubulars, what happens if you flat? Is your race done? Pardon my inexperience, as I always ride clinchers and perhaps don’t understand the anatomy of a tubular, but can you replace that on the fly like you can a clincher tube? Doesn’t glue get in the way of a quick change? Thanks for obliging.
If you know what you are doing, changing a tubular is far quicker than changing a clincher tube.
Like tirbirguy says it’s faster to change a tubular. The spare you carry is pre-stretched and pre-glued so all you have to do is pop it on and inflate. May not be as secure as a glued on tire, but there is enough glue residue that it is more than secure.
