Things wrapped up for a busy weekend of racing at Gravel Worlds with the USA Triathlon Gravel National Championships held at the spectacular Branched Oak Lake. Athletes were welcomed to the race site this morning with an impressive sunrise along with some rain, which helped create a beautiful rainbow and also packed the gravel roads down a bit, so things weren’t quite as dusty on the bike.

The national championship featured two distances – a sprint (750 m swim, 17 mile bike, 5 km run) and an intermediate distance (1,500 m swim, 28 mile bike and a 10 km run. This is the first of four years that the event is slated to take place here in Lincoln.

We’ve got all of the podium results after the gallery. For full results you can click here.

Caroline Theil would win the sprint distance race overall.

Grayson Masterson was the fastest male in the sprint triathlon.

Sheri Schrock won the sprint-distance duathlon.

Betty Janelle won the 60 to 64 category in the sprint triathlon.

And rounding out the athlete experience, the crew from Aragon Tavern were on hand to create some incredible cheese steaks!

Intermediate Distance

Kevin Denny took the overall win in the intermediate distance race.

i thought i saw a video on facebook showing TT swim start… is this correct? I hope not, i put my thoughts in the triquest thread, but drafting is part of gravel racing. taking that out takes the most interesting dynamic out of the race. especially when there are only 50 people in the race.

Are aerobars banned? I hope so.

It was a rolling swim start - three at a time. Drafting was still allowed, though.

No aerobars allowed. USA Triathlon officials were on top of that.

so that’s a problem. if a strong bike pack formed from the first few people to start the swim in a rolling fashion, and you were the last to start the swim, you would be at an unfair disadvantage. it’s one thing to have a rolling start when you have huge numbers and a tighter swim venue (and drafting illegal). But when you have small numbers and drafting is legal it is inherently unfair to some people.

So few folks, not even worth talking about.

That definitely happened, especially with the self-seeded swim start. I wouldn’t call it “unfair” though, it’s just the nature of the beast.

We are working with USAT on this format to try to make it better… it’s still pretty new. The race was a lot of fun though.

Thanks for the coverage. I know you provided link to official results but i think the sprint Duathlon results need 1 hour added to them…

Thanks so much for catching that! Not sure why that got removed, but I have added the “hour” to all of the times now!
