Mizuno Wave Rider to Asics recommendation

I am looking for a recommendation for the closest Asics shoe to the Mizuno Wave Rider. Is it the gel-nimbus, gel-kinsei, gel-kinetic,gel-cumulus, gel-landreth, gel-stratus or other? The reason for the change is sponsor change.

Thanks for your help.

Asics Landreth or cumulus is the closest
.

I agree the landreth is probably the closest. I can’t say enough about Asics, in the past three years I ran the Boston Marathon, New York Marathon, Marine Corp Marathon and Long Island marathon in the Asic Gel Kayano. Trained and raced many many miles in the KAYANO and never had any problems.

1a - Landreth
1b - Speedstar
2 - Cumulus
.

I don’t think there’s a pure neutral Asics that comes close. 2008 and 2007 Landreth and Cumulus feel more cushioned (and less responsive), and Speedstar much less supportive, than the waverider. Nimbus feels like a heavy trainer and not in same class. I personally like the Landreth and Cumulus and think they are great shoes for training, but feel very different than the waverider (which I also like) in that the waverider feels more like a responsive lightweight trainer (although roughly the same weight as the Landreth and Cumulus). I think the Asics DS Trainer comes closest, although it’s not a pure neutral shoe. Just my 2 cents.

I agree 100% with this. The Rider has a lighter, more flexible feel than the Cumulus and Landreth. It’s also a more stable shoe than either of these because of the Wave plate that Mizuno uses. I would also go with the DS Trainer as a replacement.

The DS trainer is a performance stability shoe…Really a different class than the Wave Rider. It’s more akin to the Wave Elixer.

The Wave Rider (I currently run in these and the Elixer) feels like the Nimbus only a bit ligher and more flexable. To me the Nimbus feels like the same quality as the Kayano only without the anti-roll support.

I have not run in the Landreth or Cumulus so your opinions would be better than mine about that.

The Nimbus is like a 2 pound mountaineering boot compared to a Rider.

No Asics shoe is entirely similar to a Rider. If I was a long term Rider user I would likely split my miles between a Landreth and a Speedstar; slowly shifting more mileage to the Speedstar.

I run full time in the Speedstar and love them. I transitioned over the course of 1 year from a Cumulus to the Speedstar with a pair of Landreths in the middle. Also of note, I am 185 lbs.

Thanks for the insight, I am also 185.

Why switch?

I also think that the Landreth is closest. For me they are more comfortable and last longer than the riders. The nimbus are more comparable to the wave creations. I am also around 185 and can run comfortably in the speedstars although you can certainly tell that they are a lot less cushioned than the Landreths.
