Mizuno Running Shoes?

Hey, does anybody out there wear Mizuno running shoes? If so, what model and how did they feel compared to other running shoes?

I’m currently using Nike Lunarglide 3 and they’ve seem to be fine for what I’m doing, but I’m wanting to see what else is out there I might be missing. I’m 6’1" & around 169lb and run about 35miles per week.

I’m a neutral runner so Mizuno recommended models:

Rider 16Enigma 2Creation 14Prophecy 2And for a faster pace shoe (under 7min pace per mile)

Precision 13Ronin 5 If I “push it” I can hold a 7min pace for 10mi, but thats it.

Thanks,

I run in the riders, don’t like the precisions cuz they don’t fit me right and they aren’t much lighter than the riders anyway.

For faster training i use Asics shoes. Specifically the DS racers

I think you’ll do well with the new Rider. High quality, nice fit and not too soft, not too firm…just right!

Roughly same height and weight as you. Run about 30-40 mpw. Train @ 7:00-7:30, race in low 6’s.

I think the Precision is a great shoe. You don’t need to be super-fast to wear them, it’s just a lighter shoe with less padding. I think at your weight, it’s probably not an issue wearing a lighter shoe if your form is OK.

I currently alternate between the Precision and my Newtons. I switched from NB a few years ago to Mizuno exclusively. I was throwing away my NB’s every 200mi due to foot pain issues. I took about 45s off my 5K time after the switch. All of the Mizuno shoes seem to have better quality padding (without compromising breathability) than other shoes I’ve worn, particularly around my ankle. My foot doesn’t move laterally so much when I’m wearing them. They also have the gimmicky spring looking thing on the heel. I don’t know what that does.

I started wearing Wave Riders when they were just Wave Riders with no number after the name and Mizuno was just a soccer shoe company. I have never worn anything but Mizuno since.

Recently is switched from Wave Riders to Enigmas. They feel the same, fit the same, and are sized the same. I’m still on my first pair so I can’t comment on durability.

I race in Ronin 4’s sockless. They also seem to fit the same and size the same, but they feel different. I believe they have a lower heal.

In the dozens of shoes and 1000’s of miles I have never had a product failure.

BTW, I’m 6 ft, 170, and a mid foot striker naturally. My shoes show very little wear after 450 miles, which is when I change them.

I have about 250 miles on the new Elixir 8. I’m guessing our proportions are the same(I’m 5’9" and low 140s). I ran (a lot less) last year in the Elixir 7s. After trying (running) in about 8 other pairs I stuck with the elixirs as my training shoe. At about 50 mpw I am hoping for more cushioning but to be fair my feet could just need to toughen up.

I am neutral as well (supinator - high stiff arches) and wear the Wave Riders and Precision a lot, but **love love love my Ronins. **

You’re not that heavy so start with the Wave Riders - solid all around shoe - and then add one of the others in the rotation (you do rotate your shoes right? I have 4 pairs in rotation now - Riders 15, Riders 16, Ronin 3, and Kinvara)

Before switching to Mizuno, I was a dedicated Asics wearer (Nimbus esp).

Edit: I currently run ~80-90km/week on and off road in the above shoes.

I’ve worn Mizuno since 2008 or so. Always their neutral models with the exception of the Musha as I like the transition of a flat-soled shoe. Probably had 15 pairs of Rider, 4 of Precision, 3 Mushas, 2 Ronins and 1 creation. This past winter I was running 140k per week in Riders (2 pairs alternating) with some workouts in Mushas.

FYI - if you are thinking about the precision, consider that it will be discontinued in the second half of 2013 and replaced with the Sayonara. This looks to be a really good update so I’m looking forward to it. Lighter, but with softer foam. The current precision fits slightly wider in the toe box than I was used to and its quite soft. To me the Rider feels a bit more firm and the precision actually feels softer even though its considered the light-weight trainer of the brand.

Even with a neutral foot type you may find the Musha to be a great fit. It’s a light stability shoe. You can find the Musha 4’s dirt cheap @ Running Warehouse.

I am lucky and can run in just about any shoe. I was an asics fan for years but then went to Newton then to Mizuno.

I havent run in a more comfortable shoe than the wave elixer. they are kind of goofy looking but…so what.
I like the ronin on the summer.

I have no trouble with Elixer for 42.2.

I’ve been in the precision since 2008 and have enjoyed each model. I started with the Creation and then rider but thought both were too much shoe, this was 2006-2007 I believe…

Ronin is a nice shoe. It’s technically a stability shoe, but so little that you won’t notice.

I guess it all depends on how much shoe you need and ow efficient a runner you are. Start with the rider and move to the universe depending on how efficient you are. The new Evo lines are nice too if you can handle the 0 drop.

I ran in many different brands of shoes over the years… brooks, saucony, asics, nikes…ALWAYS had shin pain. Bought a pair of Wave Rider 13’s a couple years back… never had shin pain since. I don’t know if it’s the shoes? …But I haven’t changed anything else. They work great for me. Went through 3 pairs of the 13’s, 3 pairs of the 14’s, then ran in New Balance 890s for a year because I can get a really good deal on them… Ended up rekindling my love for wave riders and now i’m in a pair of wave rider 15’s.

You can get the 15’s cheap right now cause the 16’s just came out.

I use the riders. Not heavy, but not too light for lots of miles.
Great shoe. Been looking to get a new set, but can’t seem to let go as these are working so well for me.

I have been running in Mizuno’s since 2000. Creations, Wave Rider, Precision and, now Enigma. Personally, I preferred the cushioning in the Creations and Enigma over the Wave Riders although they all worked OK. I only use the Precisions for longer races - 1/2’s and IM’s. The best thing about Mizuno’s in my opinion is that shoes do not change significantly from one model to the next - with minor exceptions. The cushioning and wide toe box just work for me and keep me almost entirely injury free since the switch from Asics, Brooks, Nike and Saucony.

I love the Wave Precision 12 or 13s. I came from 7 years in Nike Zoom Air Elites and a failed attempt with Asics Gel DS Trainers. The Precision is an incredible shoe with the perfect amount of support and cushion for me. I think I am a neutral forefoot striker but have had 0 issues with these other than the new color options. I have stocked up with the red/white.

I find them to be right on as far as sizing goes and they last several hundred miles (might be my only complaint is that I go through them faster than I’d prefer. But they keep me comfortable running 20-30 mpw averaging sub 7:20. I’m 6’ and 150 (although recent bout with norovirus might have changed this downward). Excellent shoes!

The rider is AMAZING. Also love the ronin’s. I’m a huge fan of the separate toe box design and the forefoot/midfoot cushion on these. The evo’s are sweet too if you get a chance!
