Does not appear to be triathlon related, but, not good nonetheless, especially given IMWI this weekend.
Divers from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office were expected to return to Lake Monona Thursday morning to look for a swimmer reported missing late Wednesday night.
The unidentified missing man and a second man went for a swim from a boat at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, and when one swimmer returned to the boat, the other swimmer did not.
“He couldn’t see or hear the other individual,” said Lt. David Dohnal.
The boat was between the Olin Park boat ramp and Monona Terrace in the western part of the lake, so the area to search is quite large, said Bernadette Galvez, public information officer for the Madison Fire Department.
Who goes for an OWS at night?
From the limited facts available thus far, it appears to be a couple people in a boat splashing around in the water. In other words, it was not an OWS as we would describe it.
how crappy would it be to swim onto a dead body at the turn. Like the face in JAWS just popping up at you. Are they letting people swim today?
For now, the course is open, but, there appear to be divers in the swim area. That was as of about an hour ago.
man i think about that somtimes when practicing OW… breathe in some water wrong, choke, go down
forever
That scares the hell out of me too. We were looking at houses this summer and considered buying one with a pool. My wife said, “well, I can swim for exercise” to which I replied, “yeah, but its not as convenient as you might think. You still need me to watch while you swim.”
As a drowned body decomposes, it produces gasses that eventually cause it to float. The time for this to happen would likely vary based on water temperature, depth, etc.
I’m hoping for the family’s sake (and my own; I’m going swimming there on Saturday and Sunday) that they find him soon.
there are some people on this board that would get beat by a dead guy on the swim…
Unfortunately, the same can be said of my running…
sad story, all kidding aside…
Thanks for this post. Just recently moved into a house on a lake, and despite being an excellent swimmer I HATE going on open water swims by myself (even though I have a mile out and back where I can usually touch and rarely am more than 20 ft. away from a dock).
Did a forum search, seems like people like them, so I’m going to order one tonight.

People will buy anything; I’d like to hear a lifeguard or other resue person comment on it. All this gadget does is keep your body from sinking. It does nothing to put you into a position where you can breath especially if you’re unconcious.
I think if you’re so worried about swimming in open water that you’d wear one of these then maybe you shouldn’t be swimming there.

Keeping my body from sinking…sounds like a good idea. I really don’t see myself wearing a Type I PFD, which is the only thing that will keep me in a position to breath should I become unconscious. What I most worry about when I’m swimming alone is cramping up or having a heart attack (at 40 and a healthy non-smoker I’m not immune, but not high risk as well). In either of these situations, having a little extra buoyancy around my waist, similar to an old-style ski belt, would give me a little extra help in getting to a dock or a place I can stand.
If you want to knock this device, why don’t you knock everyone else who has a partner/spouse along side of them in a canoe, kayak, or boat who has no lifeguard training and/or CPR instruction.
I’m not worried about swimming in open water or my swimming abilities, I’m concerned about swimming ALONE in open water, even in a very public and visible place, and am willing to spend $80 to slightly reduce the risk (and I think that anyone who swims alone and drowns is up for a Darwin Award).
Well at least if you can trigger the device before you drown, it won’t take days to find your body when it floats back up … that might be worth the $80
