Minimalist shoe recommendations for wide feet

I’m in the market for a new pair of running shoes and have been running in the Kayano 15s for awhile now. I had been a heel striker for many years until knee injuries forced me to make a gradual change to a forefoot strike, and I’ve have been able to run relatively pain-free since the switch. Although I changed to a forefoot strike, I did not change my shoe (the Kayanos). So now that I’m in the market for new shoes, I have been looking around at minimalist running shoes such as the Newton’s, but they only come in a medium width, which is too narrow for my fat ass feet–I wear a 9E.

Does anybody have any recommendations on minimalist running shoes for a person with wide feet (9E)? (I hope this thread doesn’t turn into a debate about forefoot striking versus heel striking).

Does the NB905 come in widths? Might be an option. More a flat than minimalist, but less is more…

Was actually looking at that on the Road Runner Sports website. It does come in wide sizes. I will probably head over to the local running store and check them out. Have any experience with the 905s?

I’ve used the 905’s… and they were too wide in the heel for me. But my feet are kinda like a ducks, slim heel and wide forefoot. However I also use the Asics Galaxy and they fit just fine, might work for you if the 905’s don’t.

Nike Lunar Trainers run very wide. Thet have a reasonable amount of padding on the sole, but no support in the arch, ankle, etc. Bad news is they have apparently been discontinued by Nike. I’m doing my running in these and Vibram’s.

I also have wide feet, and have found that just wearing a shoe a size bigger does the trick…And since most of my running is off road, I like the little slip in the shoe on the downhills and have never had a problem with blisters. In fact it is the opposite, when I wear the right size, I get the side blisters from the tightness there. This way I can wear any shoe regardless if they make a wide one or not…

Newtons are pretty far from being minimalist. They may encourage a forefoot strike but they still have plenty of outsole and structure (things commonly absent from truly minimalist shoes).

That said, most minimalist shoes will run narrow. I have found the Mizuno Universe 3s to be a bit wider. But those are really minimal and probably too extreme if you’re really looking for something like a Newton.

+1 on Lunar Trainers. They are still widely available (http://www.become.com/lunar-trainer?&qet ) (even Nordstrom has them at some locations), and many places have them marked down.

Tons of forefoot cushioning…moderate durability. I looked at the Lunar Swifts, and they are a bit softer and some modest arch support. They are also build on a straighter last and bulkier (10.2 oz. vs. 8.5) due to more of an outersole and a heavier upper.
