I read all the recent threads about the ipod and am seriously considering buying one. My other option is the NIke psa one… I own the old version and really like it. Does anyone own the new one? And about the ipod battery problem… can you put your own batteries in there or you have to use the one that comes with it? Last question… I was downloading songs from matchmusic to my pc last night but then it wouldn’t let me download it to my mp3, saying that I didn’t have the “rights” for that… anyone else have that problem?
Take a look at the new Rio Carbon - better battery life than the iPod mini, more capacity, etc.

The carbon is damn seksay!

This is (most likely) due to a copy-protection scheme built into the file you were trying to transfer - the originator of the file can determine how many copies you can make, on what formats, etc. The only solution/workaround I’m aware of is to get another copy of the file without the transfer limitation.
I hate my NIKE SPA - it is about 1 year old and a piece of crap. Down loading music is tough and the volume control is horrible. I have gone through 3 pair of head phones, and now not even a new pair will work. I would not buy another.
I just got an iPod 20gig player and so far I am impressed. It fits perfectly into one of the bottle holders in my Fuel Belt for running with.
I have a question for all of you experienced iPod users. I have been downloading my CD collection into the software and then transferring it to the iPod. When I got to about 4 gigs loaded on the iPod, I started getting error messages for the occasional song transfer. I figured maybe my PC hard drive was getting full since all of the songs appear to stay in the iTunes software. So I deleted everything off the software to free up hard drive space and that took care of the error messages. Only problem, next time I connected the iPod, it erased everything off the iPod, all 4 gig worth. Don’t say it, I’ve already called myself a dummy. So then, is that right, you basically need to have at least enough hard drive space on your PC for the amount that you want to load onto the iPod?
Not necessarily. Sounds like you have auto-sync on, but you can turn that off. Two basic ways to keep your iPod in sync with your iTunes are:
(1) full automatic syncing
This is the easiest, but also the least control, and, as you’ve discovered, can bite you. This syncing mode means whenever you plug your iPod in, it will automatically be updated to exactly match whatever’s in your iTunes. So as long as you keep adding songs to iTunes, and have enough room for them on your iPod, and have enough room for them on your computer, no problem. But if you want to delete something from iTunes but leave it on your iPod, or if you have more songs in iTunes than you can hold on your iPod, then you have a problem
(2) manual syncing
This gives you control, but requires more work on your part. In this mode, the iPod doesn’t do anything automatically. To get songs onto it, you drag them (or playlists) from iTunes to the iPod. In this mode, you can delete everything from iTunes without affecting your iPod library. Or you can have more music in iTunes than you can hold on your iPod and still not have any problems.
Sounds like you might want to try manual syncing.
One more tip: as you’re going to the trouble to rip all your CDs to MP3s (or AACs), I recommend backing up those MP3s to CD or DVD so if you lose your hard drive (or, say, delete all your songs), you don’t have to go to the trouble of re-ripping all the CDs.
Get the iPod…
I’ve gone through a bunch of Nike’s - I got the extended warranty plan that lets me exchange it whenever it breaks. I have to exchange it every 3-4 months. I think that it is shorting out b/c sweat is getting inside. Besides that, the software sucks, it is hard to use and it lacks many of the features that are standard on all others.
for working out, nothing beats this IMHO.
I have owned an iPod since the first came out. I now own a 20Gig and my wife has a mini. They are excellent products. Easy to use and if you have iTunes, which I suggest, getting music on an off is a breeze. Oh, if you don’t already, buy a Mac.

Pyker,
thanks, excellent advice!
