Milk/yogurt destroys the antioxidant properties of blueberries

Any other food combinations that are bad?

I’m on a smoothie diet to get to a more appropriate runners weight and this stuff keeps me up at night.

That’s good for eating before or after a workout, then. Because the antioxidant properties are bad for athletes. At times.

But are antioxidants as amazing as everyone thinks? So called “superfoods” have them in excess, but the body produces antioxidants already. Do we really need extra antioxidants from blueberries? I challenge you to read Michael Ristow’s theories on mitohormesis. In short, the stress caused by free radicals in the body causes the body to produce more antioxidant enzymes, and thus the body is able to cope with more stress down the line on it’s own. Kind of like letting kids play outside in the dirt instead of growing up in a sterile environment so their immune system is stronger later in life.

Not saying I necessarily disagree with the blueberry/yogurt theory but antioxidants might just be hyped up by the blueberry, pomegranate, and acai berry farmers of the world.

Eat chia seeds
.

Reference please. And good thing I don’t eat blueberries and other foods for their “superfood” properties. I just eat them because they are tasty

I have 10 pounds in my cabinet. Organic chia seeds pickle my britches. Thanks to the guy who suggested them in another thread.

They make you poop good too.

I had two McDonald’s cheeseburgers and chocolate milk for lunch today.

It was delicious.

Trying to micromanage your food like this will get you nowhere.

This fact is why cows aren’t allowed to eat blueberries. It stunts the growth of calves

I bet blueberry milk causes cancer and slow IM run splits as well!

Pink?

you may not be aware that is about antioxidant supplements, not actual foods

Don’t feed the troll. In this case don’t feed him blueberries or advice.

I was being somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Yes, the studies were done with high dose supplements. That’s because it’s the easiest way to control dosage.

But I wrote what I did because I remember a line in an article by Dr. Sims of Osmo Nutrition, who recommends avoiding antioxidant rich*** foods*** after exercise:

"So, I can eat my antioxidants in food, just not in supplements?

Dr. Sims: Not right away. No berries or similarly antioxidant rich foods immediately after exercise. Wait 4-5 hours post exercise once the acute recovery period is over. Sorry smoothie lovers.

I don’t know if she has any direct scientific evidence for that. I don’t think so, since none of the studies she linked to used food as the antioxidant source. I think she’s using the assumption that a serving of berries (or other antioxidant rich foods) have an antioxidant dosage comparable to a supplement and therefore have the same physiological effect as a supplement. Seems like a reasonable assumption. But of course there won’t be proof one way or the other until someone repeats the research using food.

You just need to relax between this thread and your previous ones mainly this. http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=5163843;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25

Food/nutrition isn’t that complicated despite the sports nutrition companies claim that they are (in an effort to sell you overpriced stuff you don’t need $

Not intended as a troll, but since I love pissing off the snobby veteran posters with one of the few non-Kona/non $10k bike threads, I’ll just roll with it:

I’m on a smoothie diet I bought into another mostly ineffective eating gimmick to get to a more appropriate runners weight and this stuff keeps me up at night.

FTFY.
