Mike Pigg's Triathlon Plan

I am in my first year of tri’s having just completed a dozen or so supersprints/olympic and more recently a half ironman. My focus is going to be 70.3 distance events and I was wondering if anyone had anything to say about Mike Pigg’s Triathlon plan ?

This is from the ad…**“Mike Pigg and his coach, Phil Maffetone, created this training plan to help triathletes experience the joy of reaching their potential. The Mike Pigg Triathlon Training Plan develops a customized and precise training schedule loaded onto the PC Coach calendar. This heart-rate based plan will set up workouts for you based on your current fitness level, your goals, and your training preferences.”…

Has anyone used this, purchased it or know anyone that has and is it any good? I would like to do most of my training on my own for another year or two before I invest in expensive professional coaching so I thought this may be a good option…

Can anybody offer me their opinions on this?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Have you bought it yet? If not, I have it and can mail it to you as long as you send it back.

So This is a good plan because Mike Pigg was an awesome Triathlete or the plan is worth the price?
Would this plan aid a Triathlete that has raced 70.3’s with times in the
4:30-4:40’s ?

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the short but strong statement. I will take on board your positive input.

I am not in the loop of who’s hot and who’s not, but I was doing some research on aerobic threshold training and started reviewing some of Phil Mafettone’s work and up came Mike’s pc planner. The internet is great for finding stuff easily but sometimes it’s hard to know what is of value.

That is very kind of you however I live on the underside of the world and postage may probably cost nearly the same as buying it…would you be happy to ship it all the way to Australia?

Are they still selling PC Coach? The website looks very out of date and you can’t get it at Amazon or other internet sites anymore.

Atlanta??? when/where?

He used to do the silk Airport ride and I think Silk Sheets…back when he and his wife were trying to conceive. They were seeing a fertility doctor here…Dr. Kort?

How funny to see this thread. I was doing a ride on my indoor trainer this weekend and put on an old VHS recording I had made of the 1988 USTS National Championhips in Hilton Head. Mike Pigg was at his prime back then, and he and Mark Allen were in a duel at the end of the run (Pigg held him off).

It featured Pigg on the bike, where he was known to just hammer and punish (and effectively). He and Harold Robinson were going back and forth on the bike leg, when suddenly the commentator announced that they had just been joined by an intruder a “16 year old by the name of Lance Armstrong”. I almost fell off the bike. I knew he had done some tri’s early on, but I didn’t realize I had some footage of him at 16. Amazing tape.

I used Piggs’ training plan for a while a number of years ago. It was fine. I have no idea how it matches up with what’s out there on Training Peaks and some other places.

I know that Mike was in Atlanta in 1998 for the USTS race, which he won (http://trifaster.freeservers.com/shark/shrkpage/reports/atlanta98.html).
Mike signed race bibs at the expo. Got that one hanging on my wall

wylie - any chance you could post that vid on youtube ? Please, PLease, PLEAse, PLEASE !! :O)

Natasha - if you are in Australia then perhaps look up Brad Bevan on Google. I believe that he has a training program as well.

I know him personally as I went to school with him ( we were all tri buffs back then ) and he recently signed two birthday cards for two friends of mine ( I live in Europe now ). He also gave me 2 signed racing tops for each of my friends. Top guy !!

I won a copy of PC Coach at a race over 15 years ago. How current is this ad? I met Mike at a race held on St Thomas Island (VI) back in the 90’s. Great guy and great race but only held that one year. Pigg and Karen Smyers were the winners.
