Is anyone on a migraine preventative medication that works well for you? The few I’ve tried work well to reduce my migraines but either a) slow my heart rate, b) lower my blood pressure or c) make my brain fuzzy, all of which lead to decreased ability to push myself in triathlon training. Will be seeing my primary doc again soon and would love to have an idea of something that has worked for others.
Have considered just ditching the preventative med all together but ~8 migraines/month was also getting pretty difficult to train through. Ugh.
My wife has suffered from migraines for years unfortunately, she was on the Botox shots for some years then changed to Amovig injections two years ago, she does the shots herself once a month, neither one of them didn’t bother her too much with her training, or the usual side effects of regular medications, both worked really quite well at controlling the migraines but of course not 100% of the time.
The trouble is anytime she has to take some of her standby oral medications if she gets a really bad migraine, they will affect her with the usual issues of nauseous, brain fog etc. Last month she spoke with her neurologist and apparently, he was recommending a new infusion process that lasts 3 months, she is looking at starting that in September. Best of luck to you. Cheers LA Rob
I use Emgality for a once per month preventative injection. It’s been life changing for me. So many fewer headaches. I also have NO side effects from this drug.
The injection is a little painful, I ice the area first then use the injector.
For acute migraines I use either imitrex pills or injectable but rarely need theM since I started the Emgality.
The physician or website can provide you are card for free Emgality too

8 per month is harsh duty for sure. I don’t get that many but will usually just ride if I have one. It’s less annoying than anything else I could do.
Best race I’ve had in many years was while in the throes of a gnarly migraine (state TT, 2019). No sleep, nauseous, surreal. Would have not started, but I missed the previous race due to a broken fork… so just said “fuck it”. I was surprised that it did not reduce my performance at all and may have even helped.
What’s the drug that lowers your blood pressure? I need some of that anyway…
I’ve found naproxen helps some whenever I get a migraine.
I was on Topamax but after a mouth or so it seemed like my brain was 1/2 second delayed for everything. My neuro switched me to Zonisamide and I take it before bed now and it seems to help.
I was on a Beta-Blocker as well for the migraines and hand tremor but that was horrible and just told her I couldn’t do it anymore.
My neuro issues stem from a blast injury that knocked meh out for 20min. I don’t know what triggers mine, they are random. Two tabs of Imitrix once I feel it coming on and cool dark quiet room helps. I only had to get a Toradol shot twice for them when it lasted over 24hrs.
