MiamiMan short review

Just a quick recap and race review for the MiamiMan 2007 Half-IM distance. I drove down on Saturday, turned off the Turnpike and found the park really easy. Registration took about 5 minutes, and went off to review the swim and bike courses. Here’s the raceday results:

The swim is in a manmade lake but I thought looking at the buoys that it seemed pretty long. You start on a sand shore and do 2 laps, the water was pleasantly cool with a wetsuit, mostly clear with some algae. The first turn was chaos with ~100 people all bunched up trying to make a left turn. With the size of the lake I don’t think they could really change this though. What they should do is simply add 1 more wave instead of taking all 34 and younger males all at once. Maybe do 50+ males, 30-50 males and <30 instead. Anyway, the swim I think was definitely long…if there’s one thing I am consistent in it is the swim. In ~15 HIMs I’ve always been 37-39 mins, and with a wetsuit this one was 42 mins and I was moving pretty good. Several other people said this to me as we were running back to T1. Only a couple of people went under 30 mins, with the fastest at 27:45 or something…and he won the race in 4:04.

Speaking of which…ouch. Lots of people complaining about the pavement, rocks on the path, length of the run (at least a half mile), etc. With the road layout of the park I don’t think there’s another easy way to do it, but I still have a bruise on my left foot from stomping on a big rock on the way back.

I drove the bike course just before dark and noted any rough spots. It is FLAT FLAT FLAT. The biggest elevation change is about 3 feet. Pavement is good for 90% of the course. There are a couple of bumpy areas, especially near intersections, and a couple of badly patched potholes. But for the most part the pavement is very smooth and the cops did a good job of controlling traffic (with the exception of the guy that directed a SEMI to turn left in front of a big group of us going 25+mph). What WASN’T nice was the wind. O M F G. There were segments I was pushing 275W and barely going 20mph. With the wind coming from the NE it was brutal for the majority of the course, especially on the way back. My odometer read 53.5 miles, and it’s usually accurate within 0.3mi or so on accurately measured courses.

The run course is a 2 loop setup going around the lake along a paved path, then cutting across a segment of dirt road around another lake and into the zoo. The zoo part is pretty cool, with the exception of running past the pungent rhino p00p! The water stations were well stocked every time I went by, and the volunteers were good at making sure you got what you needed. They were pretty well spaced except for coming from the top of the map. The station was actually about halfway up the long out-and-back section, not at the corner in the parking lot like it’s shown on the map. I think it was close to 2 miles between the stations, which was pretty long even on a fairly cool day (80ish) like yesterday. It wasn’t a big deal, but a lot of people on the first lap were asking where the #@$%@# station was?!? There’s an offroad section on the second part too, but it’s mostly smooth with no big divots and isn’t a dustbowl like IMFL70.3.

Anyway, overall I’d give it an 8.5 out of 10 on HIM races. It’s a good end-of-year race, though I think I’d probably do the Florida Challenge HIM instead if I weren’t doing the GFT that day. If they could figure out how to lay out transition to be closer to the water…or put down some mats along the path…or simply sweep all the rocks off them that would be great! I might go back next year to get revenge on the wind…

Let me tell you a secret… It wasnt as windy as 2 and 3 years ago, you lucked out

Its a good race I think but I agree with you the swim was way long, I came out of the water so pissed off with my time I lost focus for 1/2 of the bike portion.

Peace

All-in-all, a good summary and similar to my experience, with two exceptions:

  1. The run from the swim to T1 is nowhere near a half mile. Long? Yes. Half mile? No. (My T1 was 4:09 - I guarantee you that I can’t run a barefoot half mile, strip a wetsuit, and put on socks, shoes, sunglasses, and helmet in 4:09…without blowing up.)
  2. “Fairly cool day.” Kiss my ass. 80 ain’t cool. It’s 45 in NY today - how the eff was I supposed to be ready for 80?

Other comments:

  • I think they could ease the traffic problem on the swim by going counter-clockwise instead of clockwise, but I didn’t find it to be all that bad, anyway.
  • The volunteers were good and I thought the aid stations were generally well placed and well organized. The only issue I had was that it seemed that ice distribution might have been a bit off. I grabbed a cup of Accelerade somewhere in mile 5 that was warm. The feeling of warm Accelerade made me projectile vomit immediately, and the idea of trying to drink Accelerade at any other aid stations was grotesque, so I had nowehere near enough electrolytes for the heat and cramped up really badly. That said, I don’t think that there were consistent categorical problems - seems like there may have just been a late ice delivery to this one aid station. Since I never tried the Accelerade again, I have no way of knowing if this was common. It sucked at the time, though.
  • I tend to prefer run courses where you run really close to people going the opposite direction - I like the constant stream of distraction/motivation of seeing other racers. As a loop course where even the out-and-back part was separated by several yards and contant trees, MiamiMan felt like a long solo trudge. But for an overall non-out-and-back course, it was nice. I can’t tell if I liked the curvy zoo path part for the distraction and not having to look three miles down a road that we were going to have to run or disliked it for the constant curves.
  • I’m glad you thought the consensus was that the swim was a bit long - my time was slower than hoped/expected, so I was looking for an excuse to stop pouting about it.
  • You need exactly three gears on the bike, one for with the headwind, one for the tailwind, and one for the side wind. No hills at all.

Overall, a pretty good race and one that I’d consider in future seasons.

The swim was DEFINITELY LONG!!! i swam 3 min slower than last yr and i tell you my swim has improved ten fold this yr…The guy that won in 4:04 is a Pro ITU racer from Argentina, he just came from Panama and was going back to Argentina for some more racing in 2 wks.

The wind wasnt that bad when i wsa out there but i only did the international so idk…i averaged 20-21 on the way to the turn around and 19-20 the way back. Cops were good cept when i saw them allow a truck to make a right turn in front of two guys that were flying lol, i could here the brakes on the disks from 50 yrds away…

The aide station you mention on the out and back was moved from last yr, why idk but it was at the turn around by the bus stop last yr…weather was perfect, race was good cept for the swim…

you know i also wondered if they didnt change the locations of the timing mats but idk.

I was the kid that wore an HTFU visor if you saw me lol also had the best rack in the race since they lost all my info!

Hahaha, okay so it wasn’t a half a mile. But after stomping on a big rock with my left foot it sure felt like it! And go look up www.weather.com for a forecast! Heck, it probably won’t get down to 45F at night until the middle of January here, and that’ll only be for 2 or 3 days! I don’t know if it EVER gets down to 45F in Miami!

Traffic in the swim was only annoying at the first turn, it spread out pretty quick after that. Maybe turning traffic around would help, but I don’t think people would spread out much in another 100yds, at least not enough to help. It wasn’t a big deal really, just a lot of newbies that were frog-kicking around the corner.

I agree on the ice, I am used to tossing ice under my hat to keep my core temps down. I didn’t really need it until the sun came out on my second loop, so it wasn’t a big deal to me either. I kinda like the curvy path instead of the long straightaways…it breaks up the monotony and makes it easier to keep going.

I agree pretty much with your summary. I would estimate the swim to be about 300m long.

Having ridden eagleman earlier this year i was trying to think why the bike leg seemed to be so much slower considering it was equally as flat and the pavement was as good…I then realized 600 athletes instead of 2000 meant I was nose into the wind the entire ride. It just shows how much of a benefit there is even at the legal 7 meters as my time yesterday was only 1 minute quicker for ~2 miles less than Eagleman.

Not having mile markers on the bike was an issue for some of my friends without odometers, esp since they came from up north and are not used to the headwinds.

My other recommendation for improvement would be to have larger paper cups for water on the run. I found i had to walk the aid stations to get enough fluids as i needed multiple cups and you could not squeeze them closed because they would split being plastic.

I did the race last year and this is what I did for the longish run from the swim exit to the bike. I always bring an extra pair of shoes with me. I wore these shoes to the swim start and stashed them right close to the swim exit. I run in these shoes to T1 and don’t use these shoes for the run. I think you make up the time it takes to put on the shoes with a faster run to T1.

I actually saw a girl running in shoes back to T1 and thought to myself, why the #$%#$ didn’t I do that!?!?!? I’d second the cups thing, the bigger paper accelerade cups worked better. I usually grabbed either 3 cups of water, drank 2 and a bit and dumped the other on my head.

Funny,

I had a couple of people drafting for a bit on one of the long stretches, they suck though they didnt stop when I pulled over to pee

I know, its lame, I have never stopped in a race to pee but this time I just could not go anymore. I was going to pee on myself but I was so pissed off with my ride (got stuck behind a freaking green pick up truck going 16mph for a while and nowhere to go) that I just decided to waste 2 more minutes anyways. At least no injuries and I didnt get arrested for indecent exposure

peace

I agree the swim was a little long, the bike was great, not too much traffic until the second lap. I actually thought that running through the zoo was great, except the trail coming out of the zoo before you get to the rv park. This section really tore up my feet and made them hurt.
All in all a good race and will do it again next year.

I did this race two years ago and I like it, but the bike course is 3 mile short every single year. Why do they still advertise it as 56 miles when it is 53?
Either make it the right length or advertise appropriately.
