I’m going to Miami for a long weekend (March 4-9) and was wondering what sort of training options may be available. I’m not bringing my bike but would like to get some decent runs and maybe some swimming in. I’m staying on Miami beach the first two nights and then in Coconut Grove.
Depending how far you want to travel, you may want to hit Key Biscayne. You can swim, bike and run and it shouldn’t be more than 10 minutes from either place. Key Biscayne has tons of bikers and runner on the weekends. You can also do some open water swimming as well since it has both Ocean and Bay.
Key Biscayne is a small Key penisula off of Miami that is around 15 miles long. It is totally flat except for 1 bridge, which is nice if you want to do repeats!
You can’t go wrong with Key Biscayne. As you go into the key, just park right after you cross the bridge and you will see a lot of poeple getting ready to swim, bike or run (mostly in the mornings).
Key Biscayne is where most train, but I see no need for the trip to the Key If you are not going to bike. Miami Beach is a great place to run, either on the boardwalk, sidewalks, streets or sand you will have plenty to entertain you while you run. The ocean is usually calm in the morning and you can do a swim parallel to the coast but the water is a little cold for us Floridians right now. You might find that it is fine for you. Coconut grove has some great running paths as well. One exits Coconut Grove and goes down Main Highway (its not a highway) which is almost completely shaded with trees and a really nice run. The other runs out Bayshore Drive and has a running path that goes all the way North to the entrance of Key Biscayne. This is also a nice run. Be carefull heading west out of the Coconut Grove area as it borders a rather shady neighborhood to the west.
