Mechanics: What is wrong with my HED3 wheel? (Wobbly Cassette)

On my HED3, the cassette wobbles when freewheeling. The wobble isn’t noticeable when pedaling. Here’s a video:

Is there much lateral play if you grab the top of the wheel and try to move it side to side? If so the bearings probably need to be serviced/replaced - easy fix at your LBS.

Zero lateral play. It’s tight as a brand-new wheel.

hmmm well definitely looks like the cassette body is not aligned with the axle with the wobbling you’re seeing, maybe you have a spacer in there that is not sitting flush or the freehub might need adjustment…I’ll let others chime in
.

That may be totally normal. This was normal years ago. I am curious to check out my bikes to compare.

Hopefully the guy from HED will chime in, but by just watching the video I would say nothing is wrong with your wheel. It is just fine and simply a variation in the tolerances and alignments in the freewheel assembly.

it’s related to how the hub was machined, it’s normal, sort of, but you tend to see it more on cheaper hubs. I would not worry about it at all

Likewise, every HED3 rear wheel I owned over the years (3 or 4) all did this as well. I think I did call HED about it once, and they said it was fine.

You should include HED in your title, that might get you a better chance of getting Andy to chime in. Or just call their office.

It is called cassette oscillation and it is completely normal.

I have seen that on top end old school xt hubs (pre XTR) - bought from new, well maintained, good condition etc.

It always bugged me but never caused any problems - I still have them …

Awesome. Thanks to everyone who replied. I’m somewhat relieved this thing isn’t going to explode under me.
