A business jet has crashed in northeast Philadelphia, near the Roosevelt Mall, multiple law enforcement sources confirmed to CNN.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro says he has spoken with the Philadelphia mayor and is offering all Commonwealth resources as the emergency response unfolds.
Crashed just after takeoff in the middle of Cottman Avenue, a highly travelled road in Philly, but not quite analogous to LI expressway, Santa Monica Boulevard, the Schuylkill, etc., but still a main thoroughfare
Gotta recognize the effort of the pilot (if they HAD time to react); “oh FUCK!! I’m going down - let me aim for a big patch of concrete; a road (between traffic lights, if I’m lucky?) maybe a parking lot; not a bunch of houses”
There’s video online which I won’t post here, showing someone walking from the explosion site, fully engulfed in flames. Guaranteed to be more casualties on the ground and not just victims in the plane itself. What a nightmare.
Yeah, more causalities on the ground, I’m guessing
Like said, Roosevelt Mall is pretty much empty these days (as most malls are) so the pilot was prob trying to lay it there, or pennypack park; but cottman & roosevelt is a well known intersection - not unlike Kensington & Allegheny, Hollywood & Vine, 53rd & 3rd, 42nd & Broadway - but for a bunch of different reasons
Wow. What an awful way to go.
Also, I guarantee “being hit by plane while walking” is on absolutely nobody’s list of expected ways to die. Whoever that person was, I hope the shock of the event made it pass quickly.
No idea if this is at all relevant, but I was in the city today and the clouds were thick and low. You could barely see William Penn’s head, and none of the buildings above it.
I know what that looks like; awesome & creepy at the same time (just like Philly, itself)
Early indications (videos) say catastrophic mechanical upon takeoff
ETA: I don’t know if this has anything to do with anything, but there was a huge flock of geese over my house about 5:00PM, west to east; I’m talking 200+ honking for at least 5-10 minutes as they went over
