MD ? - hydrochlorothiazide 12.5

I’ve been prescribed this along with Lisinopril for high blood pressure. Are diruetics right for athletes training 8-10 hours/week in the heat? Seems like we want more fluid/salt. I go through at least 2-20oz bottles every hour on rides.

Hello, I am an ironman athlete and cardiologists. Hydrochlorothiazide is probably not a good option for some one competing in Ironmans. However, I am also one of the first to say that getting medical advice off of internet forums is very dangerous! My suggestion would be to shop around for a physician in your area who is more familiar with Ironman racing and training. Hope this helps.

Thanks and will do.

Yes, not seeking advice on what specific drug to take, rather as you suggested, whether or not it warrants seeking an MD with more experience w endurance athletes.

As it turns our, my father’s heart surgeon is a triathlete. So a good place to start.

Have been using the hydrochlorothiazide for a couple years and have had a couple issues in extreme heat. I can’t say for certain how much was the medicine, conditions, hydration, etc. Interested in seeing the thread progress and seeing some other peoples experience. Good topic.
