I have self diagnosed myself as having some type of irritation/sprain/injury with my medial collateral ligament.
Pain on the inside of knee after running, with a general sense of instability/wobble. I also feel a lack of ability to prevent my knee from “locking” as compared to my healthy right leg. And putting my knee into the locked position causes pain right where the MCL is located.
Oddly, no pain after I have begun running – but only after I’m done and walking around. Also walking around during the day I can feel it too. No pain during cycling.
It’s been lingering for about 3 weeks, and has recently become worse in the last few days. I would call it “mild” at this point, so it seems as if some time off running is in order, before it gets worse.
What should my game plan be? Continue to bike like normal and stop running for 7-10 days, then re-evaluate? Or, longer?
Since you have no pain during cycling I would continue doing that to stay fit and if you have insurance make an appointment with a Sports Medicine Dr. or Orthopedic Dr. to get the issue diagnosed by a professional.
Many times an issue in X part of the body stems from imbalances/form issues in another part. For example many hip issues stem from ankle instability and many knee issues stem from hip instability.
Not likely an MCL problem. Medial meniscus yes, articular cartilage disease sure, but not MCL.
Can I help?

For the medial meniscus and articular cartilage disease, is the treatment the same? (i.e. take a week or so off running?)
I have only been running on a treadmill ~20-30 minutes per day at a 8:30-ish pace (paired with lots of biking like 90 min per day).
I biked/ran 70 days in a row for an average of 1.7 hours per day, and this only started at the end of those 70 days. Perhaps just overuse?
One other thing: a few months ago, I slipped on ice (but didn’t fall) which caused that same leg to slightly hyper extend. That resulted in the same type of condition I am experiencing now, but disappeared after a week or so. At the time I was not running at all so in that case it was not related to exercise or overuse. Just thought that maybe this would help somebody to diagnose my pain?
I feel the pain the most after I have been sitting down in a chair for awhile, then get up and walk around. The initial getting up and moving around is uncomfortable for the knee.
EDIT: I googled medial meniscus tear and I do have those symptoms.
The first part of conservative treatment is more or less always to seize the activity that aggravates the injury.
I think you should see a physio or a doc.
So, how’d your recovery go?
