Has anyone ridden in these yet? I looked at them today at the LBS and man, they look pretty sweet. I’m in the market for new dogs and thought I might give them a try. I wish the strap opened to the outside (Seems like Specialized is the only one that gets this), but other than that…very cool. I have Sidi t1’s now, but they are 4 years old and are 1 size too big ($30 on clearance and couldn’t pass them up).
The Scott Tri shoes open to the outside and they are very nice.

They are rebadged Adidas Tri shoes. I don’t know if they are using the low end one also, but the one with the carbon sole is the Adidas Tri Carbon, the nylon bottom is the Adidas Tri Sprint. Any other shoes they are selling are also rebadged Adidas. I think this is because Adidas doesn’t have a large dealer network for its cycling shoes here in the good ole US of A. I own a set of the Tri Carbon’s and love their fit, but that’s me. As with any shoe, try it on first. It is a totally tongueless design (there is a thin gap up the middle) that not everyone likes. If you fit into Adidas running shoes well, that would be a good indication though. FYI, if you want to see the Adidas cycling shoes, you need to go to their global website, as they aren’t listed on the US site.
I got a pair in January and love them. They fit like a glove and are incredibly comfortable. The only thing to note is that they are designed to be worn without socks and therefore fit a bit tighter than a regular shoe. It’s great if you go sockless, but if you are going to wear socks order a half size larger than you normally would.
I think it’s the other way around. Adidas Tri shoes where rebadged Mavic shoes (well, not really since Mavic was part of the Adidas group). Now that Mavic is no longer owned by Adidas, they sell the shoes under their own name.
Well, being that Mavic just started offering shoes in the past few months, and Adidas has been making shoes for at least a couple of years, if not longer. The timeline says Adidas came first. No offense.
We reviewed them for an upcoming comparison between the Mavic shoe, the new heat-moldable Louis Garneau tri shoe and a pleasant surprise from Spiuk with their value priced tri shoe.
I was very, very impressed by the Mavic shoe. Light, interesting fit features, very, very thin sole. with speedplays you’d be right on the pedal axle.
I’ll post a link when I finish putting the review together.
Ok I’ll try again… The cycling shoes that you could buy as “Adidas” for the last couple of years were made by Mavic. Back then Mavic was part of the Adidas group. Mavic made the shoes, which were sold under the “Adidas” name. A few months ago, Adidas sold Mavic to the Amersports group, and of course now they don’t sell Mavic-made shoes anymore. Mavic sell them under their own name. But they’re still the same shoes.
Tom,
Interesting thing. I was on Speedplay’s site recently to look into a set of Zero’s to go with my Adidas Tri Carbon’s (now rebadged as a Mavic shoe). There is no listing yet for Mavic shoes, so I’m guessing we can go with Adidas. Speedplays won’t fit correctly, supposedly do to a “non standard sole curvature.” I’m still in the midst of getting more info on this, but anything you find out would be greatly appreciated.
Also - with regards to Adidas/Mavic…I’m just wondering, where did all of the other Adidas bike shoe designs come from if Mavic did them, and there are only a few designs on Mavic’s site? In fact, this is the first I have seen, but now on the Adidas site, they actually Mavic as a partner in developing new shoes, which they never indicated before.
While it’s certainly possible that I misunderstood, this is the opposite of what was on CyclingNews.com a few weeks ago…
OK - spoke w/ Connor @ Speedplay. Here’s the skinny. 07-08 (and 09 too) Adidas (and Mavic) have a slight crown in the sole of the shoe from side to side, whereas other shoes are flat (on the outside). This may have something to do with comfort IMHO. Consequently, the shims don’t fit quite right. He said a guy from “Team Ouch” who has Mavic as a sponsor essentially had his shoes shaved flat side to side. I told Connor, that even though I got these on sale ($130 as opposed to $200), I really would rather shave a set of shims than shave a set of shoes. He agreed, and is sending me a set of shims to modify, before I even buy pedals, free of charge. Initially my answer from Speedplay (I don’t remember the guy I spoke to) was tough luck ole boy. I sent an email w/ my displeasure, spoke w/ Connor, and now I’m much happier (although not completely since they don’t modify the shim for you). My advice - speak to this guy, get a set of free shims, and then go to town w/ a Dremel tool (Speedplay even uses them too!). If you can’t get a free set, they’re all of $6. That way if you screw up, no biggie, helluva lot cheaper than a new pair of shoes.
I am not sure about the tri shoes, but the things that made Addidas shoes SUCK are the same things that make the Mavic shoes SUCK, the velcro straps with those little cord attachments just blow so badly I cant even put it into words. I had a set of the MTB shoes break right on the cord about 40 miles from my car on a MTB trip.
I have heard about a few people snapping the older cords, which were akin to a nylon wire. I have the new braided fabric (it might be aramid) cords. Also, my foot circumference isn’t very large, so I probably won’t put a whole lot of strain against the cords. I guess I’ll have to see what happens over time.
You know, if they fixed the quality of the cord, they would actually be pretty nice shoes, Im curious to see as they become more popular. I like how the parts are replaceable on some of the higher end models, it reminds me of the time I went down in a crit wearing a pair of Sidi genius 3s and the buckle got ground down so bad by the road that I couldnt take the shoe off, I actually had to cut it off.
Interestingly enough, the only other shoe that fit me comfortably in any way shape or form was Sidi. I’d be interested to see the new LG’s though.
I really like the bright yellow banana Helium tri shoes…but they are so damn expensive here…Almost $500
Tim O’Donnell …help out a fellow engineer…send me a pair!
Does anyone know how the Mavics fit, compared to say, Sidi? I’d really like to get the Mavic track shoes but I’m having a very difficult time finding any Mavic shoes to try on.

I just bought a pair of the Mavic Tri Race this week http://www.mavic.com/triathlon/products/tri-race.300127.9.aspx
Replacing my Sidi T2.
I noticed an instant difference and really feel like they wrap around my foot nicely. They definitely feel more substanial.
I am really happy because I have trouble finding a shoe that fits my relatively narrow foot…hope that helps

Thanks. Did you get the same size as the Sidis?

I really like them - light, comfortable, good features.

They do open to the outside, with a notch in the strap to hold it open - one of the best tri shoe designs I’ve seen. Are you sure you weren’t looking at the similar road shoes?
The only thing to note is that they are designed to be worn without socks and therefore fit a bit tighter than a regular shoe. It’s great if you go sockless, but if you are going to wear socks order a half size larger than you normally would.
Be cautious about this - they are a ‘snug’ fit, but are true to size in length. I wouldn’t want mine a half size longer.

You’re not kidding. I actually had to lower my seat post .4 cm.

My old Speedplay X1s fit perfectly, with their standard shim. Mind you, I’m tempted to figure out how to drill/modify the Mavics for 4 holes, to do away with the fugly Speedplay interface template thingy.

I leave one of them in each of my kids’ bedrooms as a night light - they can even read by the glow from them.
