Mavic Freehub Bearing Question

I bought Mavic Cosmic Carbones and swapped campy freehub w/ shimano freehub myself and put only ~200mi on the freehub. Now the hub drags: When the bike is in the trainer and I spin up the wheels, when it coasts, the freehub turns - can hear the pawls/springs click, but not as robust as it should. The crank/pedals then spin as if the hub was a fixie.

Have a set of Mavic Kysrium Elites and moved its freehub onto the Carbones and voila, perfect. Narrows it down to the freehub.

Now: What are my options? Bought the freehub < 1 yr ago and as mentioned, hardly put any miles on it. I don’t think its worth overhauling it but would consider if it makes $ sense if the new mavic hub is $60. Poked around the internet on overhauling Mavic’s Shimano hub and didn’t find much. ParkTool says not to crack into it, and not much else. Can someone w/ Mavic help as this appears to possibly be a defective freehub? Has anyone opened up their Mavic freehub and replaced bearings? Assuming they are loose bearings vs. cartridge… Help!

There’s really nothing to overhaul in those things. They’re not like Shimano freehubs which have bearings. They’re basically a shell and a few bushings. Very light, very simple.

No bearings in that hub. Assuming the washer that sits between the hub body and the freehub is in place, the only other thing to watch is the lube. That thing only has a bushing between the freehub and the hub body, so it needs to be lubed. But, anything heavier than light-weight mineral oil and it will drag. I’d take it apart, check that the washer is in place, clean the whole thing and re-lube with light mineral oil.

I have a related question about a 2004 Mavic Equipe hub. My free hub is sticking, and Mavic’s website says if you remove the axle from that wheel to service the hub, you have to replace the axle entirely, since it includes an “expandable bearing support axle,” which is a one-time-use only item. Supposedly it mushrooms inside the hub to keep it secure.

Mavic says to replace the new axle also requires a special Mavic “multifunction tool”, some very careful assembly and the use of permanent loc tite in the hub. It all sounds very scary, even if I could find the axle and special tool somewhere.

Am I understanding Mavic’s site correctly? Anyone else ever try this? At my LBS they said don’t sweat it, they would clean and lube my free hub, no special axle, no worries, etc. Not sure I trust them to do this however.

The Mavic site with the details on the Equipe is here:

Apparently later models of the Equipe use a different rear hub assembly. But the 2004 Equipe and some other Mavic wheels used the same hub. Am I out of luck with this wheel unless I replace the hub entirely?
