Masters World Champ Matthew Clark busted

SO hadn’t seen this as of yet, and apparently he got caught in a gran fondo? When did they start testing in those, always thought those were mostly fun rides. So someone here must know the guy, train with him?

typically grand fondo not meant to be competitive but now some races offering prizes

It was the time trial

Is it a body type bias to say “well he looks the part”?

Ashton Lambie turns 36 this year and has been a pursuit rider so for all intents and purposes should have more of a bulk look than a TT guy.

So yeah I’ll go there, dude looks like a “bro” on something.

This is just me being judgemental. But bulk like that isn’t incidental especially with TT tending towards favoring less upper body bulk. I can’t imagine a roadie going “hey, let’s bulk up the top half”.

Ok, so I have been out of the cycling loop for awhile, what exactly is a Gran Fondo time trial? Is Gran Fondo now a type of federation??

regarding Triathlon: has USAT ever tested any non pro? never heard of it

It was at the UCI Granfondo Timetrial World Championships in Australia last year. Call it the official UCI age group world championships. At these events, the winners always get controlled for PED.

By the way, at these World Championships former top professional Cyclists (and triathletes) show up and compete. Vinokurov, Longo, Chipollini won world titles, just to mention the most controversial ones.

I believe gran fondos are still mainly a large group ride for fun, but, there is a racy element at the front. I haven’t heard about testing or time trials though.

Seems to be the norm with “for fun” sporting events. Many moons ago, my friends and I helped start our university’s co ed intramural soccer league. Again, meant for fun and just to get out and kick a ball around. Some people had never played before, didn’t have cleats etc. Within 3 years, it became so popular that good players started showing up, then they all formed their own team and started cleaning up the tournament. Then a group of Div 1 players formed a team, and another was formed with half the freaking university varsity team. Within 5 years, it was an extremely competitive league, and new, non-competitive one had to be formed to accommodate the original demand that still existed for a fun rec league.

Yes, 100’s of them, perhaps 1000’s over the years..And they have caught a good number of cheats too, but not most of them..

There are designated segments within the entire ride, which are timed. It falls under USA Cycling as the USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championships.

Timing. The following regulations govern timing of the event.

  • Competition format is based on combined time through four (4) designated timed sections. Timed section details and locations are published before event. Start and finish locations for timed sections are clearly marked by flags and lines on the road.

  • A rider’s start-to-finish time is not calculated/measured for placement.

  • Times are taken at the crossing of each timing point.

  • The winner is determined by the best combined time of the four timed sections.

People get a little taste of victory and the Ego kicks in pretty hard. Had a buddy who doped just so he could stay up with the A group on training rides. Never raced a day in his life, but couldn’t be disrespected with dropping down to the B group.

I don’t think the Gran Fondo world championships held in Australia fell under USA Cycling

As @BergH_gi said, it’s essentially the UCI’s age grouper world championship. The time trial, which Clark won in his age group, was a true 23 km ITT on TT bikes, not just timed segments on a group ride. Equally, the ‘Gran Fondo’ was just a normal mass-start (wave-start) road race, fully timed from the starting pistol to the finish line.

EDIT: It’s basically the rebranded former UCI Master’s World Championship, with another age group added to for under 35-year-olds.

This was not a timed section, it was an actual time trial. The time trial is one of multiple disciplines, in addition to a grand fondo

“Clark won the men’s 40-44 world time trial title in October, beating a New Zealand rider by 20 seconds on a 22.9-kilometer out-and-back course along Australia’s Great Ocean Road”

I didn’t say it was. Monty was asking about timing in a Gran Fondo.

The World Championship Gran Fondo is the Road and TT World Championship. I don’t understand why they call it Gran Fondo. You have to win Road or TT National Championship or race a World Championship Qualifier and place in the top 20% to qualify to race in the World Championship Gran Fondo.

honestly, yeah, it is a little suspect to use “fits the bodytype” logic. I do it too, but we probably shouldn’t.

Only because I’ve seen them grow up: Caeleb Dressel and Ryan Murphy come to mind. They have looked like “that” since 16. (friendly advice, don’t do a google search for image searches of them as teenagers. : )

Double letters strikes again

The dude rode iirc 430-440 for the 30-40min time trial to win both USA nats, and the WC

He is an adult onset cyclist

he absolutely destroyed the masters RR, too

I wish he would explain why he did it, how he did it, etc. He was very public celebrating how strong he was all last year. I thought he raced 70.3 WC too, but I can’t find those results

Instead, he deleted all of his social media and is hiding

I know he did 70.3 STG last year and rode a 2:06 there.

Really, it seems pretty obvious why he did it. Just like most all the other cheats, some to win, others to just go faster than they should for 100’s of personal reasons. And there is no remorse, only emotion they have is anger at getting caught.
