I am looking for a masters swim program in West LA. I currently swim at Equinox, formerly Sports Club LA. They’re jacking up rates beyond what is already an exorbitant rate. Hence, time to consider other options.
Any ideas? I am a working professional and must swim mornings. What would be ideal is another gym with a pool that offers masters swim, and allows me to run or bike afterwards (and of course shower up).
Also, I got a flyer at a race some months ago for Trifit in Santa Monica. Anyone work out there? Good, bad, indifferent?
Trifit is nice facility, but the swim area is small…3 lanes from what I recall. Been there odd times, afternoons, wkends, evenings, all never that busy, though never been for morning swims.
I belong to Trifit and I used to be an Equinox member. It’s definitely not as posh as EQ, but it’s centered around tri which is cool. The gym itself is kind of oddly designed. A few of the facilities are in separate areas (i.e. the pool is separate from the main gym). I’ve heard the spin classes are great (esp. Merle’s) but I haven’t gone yet. Also, I’ve heard the yoga classes are great as well. It’s a pretty quiet gym. I’ve never seen it super busy.
The master swim classes are good. I’ve only been to a few, but it’s a good workout. I prefer the Fortius swims (in Sherman Oaks), but I work in Santa Monica so Trifit is more convenient. Let me know if you have more questions.
Check out SCAQ - there are Masters classes at all times in all areas of the city, and it’s half the price of Equinox - although that SCLA facility is very, very nice.
Would I pay what they’re charging? No. But it’s still very nice.
Thanks for all the responses. Very helpful. I will be checking out trifit.
And for the record, Sports Club LA was great. Equinox, not so much. Definitely a noticeable decline in services/amenities, which makes it harder to justify the additional cost.
Gerry and Tower 26 groups at the Palisades HS pool. Great coach, great people and great workouts. Cant recommend highly enough. (I have tried SQAC at SMC and TriFit. I like Tower 26).
Gerry’s talk tonight at TriLab will be memorable and well worth attending. It may already be standing room only, as there are lots of us that value his opinions on improving your swim and enjoy his stories.
