Massage therapists in NYC and/or Trigger Point rollers

So i just finished a season of collegiate cycling a week ago, and I’m now quite drained. Last week was the first rest week in 3-4 weeks, and i did about 1/2 of the volume and no intensity at all. Despite that, my legs still feel stiff, which is different from the sore legs i get after a hard anaerobic workout.

The Stick has worked for me in the past, yet it doesn’t seem to be doing the trick right now, and I’d be willing to shell out for a massage therapy or more gadgets such as trigger points if they could help.

So, NYCers, any suggestion on reputable massage therapists, and what should i be expecting as far as cost is concerned? A search on google turned up way too many places that seem to be implying they provide “happy endings” and another host of places where they really don’t mention the training and background of the therapists. Alternatively, if you have suggestions for a trigger point device or something similar that can really dig into the quads, i’m all ears, too.

I don’t do massage but here is my ART guy:

.

Others will certainly post specific recommendations, but a good place to start to stay away from less then reputable “happy ending” places (NTTAWWT)

Is the NYRR website

http://www.nyrr.org/get-training/resources-directory

It lists several massage therapists that are affiliated with the NYRR and their credentials
.

I have tried out a lot of places in the city and the two that I would recommend are:

Great Jones Spa - This was the best one I have had. She spent an hour, digging her elbow into my hips and glutes and hitting all of the right trigger points. This place also has ice baths, steam rooms, etc… and it comes with the price of the massage.

Tribeca Spa of Tranquility - specializes in Thai massage which is massage mixed with stretching. They also walk on you. Ask for Sarah.

Neither of these cater to athletes, but they both do a good very job in my opinion. As you may expect in the city, neither is particularly cheap. Probably $100-$120 for an hour at either spot.

As for a trigger point device, you shouldn’t need anything more fancy than a tennis ball.

thanks for all the suggestions, especially the one re: looking on the nyrr website.

my legs are better now, mainly b/c i have been resting since Sunday. I hope i won’t be trashing them anymore for the rest of the year

I asked a buddy in NYC but he said his place DOES do the happy endings soooo… sorry I can’t help.

Try looking up the american massage therapist association, you can search your zip code for therapists in the area.
You can also look up the active release technique web site, and find a provider in your area, several massage therapists or listed, but if you can’t find one, just look up anyone close ie Chiro or physio and ask them for a referral.

Call Alissa Mazer - does a great job, works with a ton of triathletes as well as the Yankees. alissamaz@aol.com is her email.

Are you ok with going to Brooklyn? I can recommend two VERY good massage Therapist’s in Brooklyn, they have slighltly diffret syles but really understand the body and how to loosen your tight muscles.
Feel free to PM if you have any questions.
