Massage Guns: Do they work and which one to buy?

Hypervolt plus.

We grabbed the Sportneer massage gun off of Amazon, it had pretty positive reviews and excellent battery life for $135CDN ish. Very happy with it thus far, we use it regularly, but only really need to charge it every couple of weeks. It comes with a bunch of different attachments, but we mainly just use 3 (I don’t use the chromed attachments that are designed for use with thicker clothing or massage oil, I mainly use the two pronged for around the spine, the flat head for almost everything, and the pointy one for precision (like the plantar fascia, or ankle ligaments, etc.). I don’t know that I would drop $400 on one, but to me it’s useful to help with recovery and to help loosen up tight spots after sessions (I wouldn’t recommend it to replace a massage, but it could help you get them less frequently and more spread out).

They seem too much like a bedroom toy for me to ever buy one.

+1

My brother bought this one and tried it himself after doing his research. He lifts weights and has the opposite body type of a triathlete, lol! He loved it so much he bought one for my wife and I to share for a Christmas present. We absolutely love it and sometimes will fight over it! The battery life is quite amazing and you get a nice case that holds the massage gun and the many attachments, so it travels very well! I would recommend this one for sure!

I have the Hypervolt and I use it daily. I said to my wife last night that it was probably the best $300 I’ve spent on training in a very long time.

I got the original TimTam and it burned out after a year, for another $50 they sent me their next model and honestly I’m still not impressed. Every now and again I’ll squeeze the trigger and it won’t turn on, it is SUUUPER noisy compared to the hypervolt and… yes, the massage guns are amazing but I could not ever recommend the Timtam

Depends what you mean by ‘do they work’. I have a theragun and it feels nice when my legs are tired, so I use it.

Does it help with recovery or performance, I have no idea.

Out of curiosity, what did you get for $60?

We have a theragun pro and are happy with it, but it’s causing fights between myself and the wife about charging and usage at the same time (ha, but not joking). I’d like to get another but I’m not going to buy another theragun or Hyperice $ product if I can save

I just got the Theragun pro kit from costco $340 or $304 something like that. Comes with 2 batteries and charger. So save your marriage get a 2nd battery and charger.

Agreed, I’d love to see studies to validate the perceived results and to avoid self-validation, just like we have studies showing that massage therapy works to a certain extent for certain things (ex: https://bmjopensem.bmj.com/content/6/1/e000614) but not very much (or at all) for longer effects.
For short term effects that are easier to assess (relieving trigger points and tense muscles for instance), I’m willing to trust user feedbacks and that’s what I based my purchase on. I for instance always have extremely tense calves, and it does help. Effect is relatively short as it doesn’t prevent tightness from resetting the next day, but just a before/after, reassessed a couple of hours later really shows a difference. Quite like massage therapy actually.
For the rest, actual recovery or alleviating DOMS, 100% with you, it’s too hard to gauge, there are too many factors and it’s too easy to be self validating a purchase. Personally, after a month of usage, I don’t really have the feeling it’s helping very much with that. Or at least, it’s too hard to properly evaluate.

Well I have been doing PT twice a week now for 3? months now. I often have stiff leg muscles depending on the workout. Often they start sessions knifing me to get knots out and try to loosen my muscles. (Many are 2 tight, after 55 yrs I am having to learn to walk the correct way… Its not fun)

Anyhow just bought the Thermagun, have only used once, but man took all the leg stiffness away last night, and today legs feel good. Of course I did not have PT friday, so… can update as the weeks go by.
