Just curious, who gets deep tissue massages regularly? I just had one and feel like I ran a marathon. I’m optimistic that I’ll feel great in a couple of days, but I’m surprised at how crappy the legs feel. Does this improve once you get used to being worked on?
Drink, drink, drink (water) and flush that crap out of your body. You’ll feel like crap for about 1 1/2 days (at least I do), then on day 3 you will be wonderful…well, at least better.
I take a super light 5 mile spin or a nice gentle walk in the 'hood to just get some blood flowing to the odd corners of my leg muscles to get the blood into there and get the “stuff” that’s been broken up outta there.
Drink more…
A rolling pin and a pointy stick are a lot cheaper and just as effective.
They aren’t usually as attractive however.
Some will say they are not necessary but what I know after 30 years doing this stuff is that regular massage helps as you get older. Helps identify tight spots you may not even be aware of and seems to work for me. Best advice is to build into a rest day. Certainly not advisable to train afterwards. Easy swim maybe and drink loads to rehydrate! Try it for a month or so and see if your legs feel fresher once the painful spots (and you will have those) have been eased.
its like anything, the first time you run 5km your going to hurt! but after a few years of training a jog over 5km is nothing! Massage is the same, but very beneficial!

I find need to really rest up, ie nothing at all, for min 12 hours and just drink until burst
.
Yes I do get them regularly. It helps being married to a massage therapist who is versed in sports massage and is a triathlete herself. Like the other guy said above, drink lots of water.
It gets better. I love my massages. They don’t improve my performance, but they take away the little nagging pains. Stick with it.
My massage therapist does a better job of getting some of kinks than I can with any of the tools I have, especially in my neck/back/shoulders. I’m usually good with my legs etc, but sometimes they are reletntless when I’m a bit of a wimp doign it myself.
How frequently do you regulars get massage? I have ART every 4 weeks and am thinking of adding massage to the cycle.

Pro cyclists that I know usually get daily to three times a week massage during the season. Probably 80% of the top 10 Hawaii Ironman finishers get daily massage a couple weeks out from the event. ( I know the guy who works on a bunch of the pros) He can tell who is going to do well by the way their muscles feel, been listening to him for 20 years, and he don’t miss often… If you are training 20 plus hours a week at least three times a week massage enables you to carry a bigger load. It is unreal how a good massage person can light you up with knots and triggers. Massage, especially deep tissue massage is really really good for you. What I have told you is fact. if you don’t want to do massage, I have no problem with that. I am just telling what guys who make a living in sport have told me for 40 years. Massage is good. A lot of guys are pretty homophobic and want a woman to do the massage. Deep tissue massage is really hard work and a bigger person does have an advantage in giving deep heavy massage. Just because she is cute does not mean a good massage.
I get a massage once a week, you will get used to it.

I have a massage about every 10 days - no longer than once in 14 days. That said I will go more often depending on training intensity and always a few days before an event and within a day or so of competing. Helps get rid of any soreness!
