Mashed potatoes in 1/2IM or IMs anybody ever tried it?

I was at a sports nutrition talk today and the person who was giving it talked about some of her clients into adventure racing enjoying salted mashed potatoes (packed into reusable/washable ‘tubes’ about twice the size of a toothpaste tube) as a way of breaking the ‘I can’t stand gels/bars/gatorade’ feelings that set in after a while (I know that after a few hours chomping down clif bars starts becoming a chore).

Anybody ever tried this? What do you think?

At Ironman California in 2001, one of the run aid stations had salted boiled potatoes. I ate a couple and they really hit the spot.

Back when I was poor, not just sort of, but really poor, I used to take boiled red potatoes on long bike rides. Between that and water, I would save some bucks over drinks and bars.
It still amazes me that one of my friends has a Starbucks pre ride, buys a bottle of water at the store midride, takes two or three gels and a bar of some sort along the way and finishes with a Jambajuice post. I would bet we are talking $10-15 per ride on the long ones. G
I was also way faster back then too, without cramps using the simple stuff.

My biking food is pierogies. Basically mashed potatoes and cheddar in a pasta pocket. Easy to handle and store in a pocket or bento box.

About as much carbs, sodium and calories in 2 or 3 pierogies as in a GU.

MMMMMMMM!

That sounds really good. Are they homemade or something I could maybe pick up in the grocery store freezer?

This company should sound pretty familiar… (They sponsor(ed?) a big tri in Chicago):

Doh! Of course…

Thanks…will give them a try on my long ride this weekend.
