Sounds like Paulo knows how to find her
.

Good for her! I wish her success and happiness. Go Mary!!!

Does this mean we may see some Tracksmith Tri gear???

Excited to see how she does. Go Mary Go!

No mention in the article of how her biking or swimming is, although it alluded to her being on a swim team at one time. If she swam as a kid, that would be a bit help. She was such a talent, and it is a real tragedy what happened to her in the Nike system. Hopefully she can have fun and develop her skills in triathlon.

Says she swam through 7th grade and could have been D1 - I found these times for her, and in my experience they don’t hold up a D1 trajectory. But the background in youth swimming is there. I wish her well.

Man - a 12 year old girl swimming 1:02/100 SCY for an “A” standard isn’t D1 trajectory??

Not even close - she was the 2566 ranked swimmer that year in that event.

For reference in 2009:

I looked up my former neighbor who swam at Georgia on a full scholarship. She swam a 58.91 in 100 SCY as a 12 year old. But she also became an all-american and swam in the olympic trials. So she was likely on the ‘front end’ of D1. Perhaps Mary could have been on the ‘back end’ if she dropped running and just swam? I only swim to get to my bike so not sure how big of a delta 3.22 seconds is

Nope…there’s up to AAAA standards…lol

ETA my daughter was 55.82 at 12, and 2:05.xx 200. She’s at a mid level D1…

We all thought that Alan Webb would do great, but he couldn’t nail the run off the bike. It’ll be interesting to see if Mary can run to her potential after a hard swim/bike beforehand. It does look like she has the swim background to be competitive.

Yeah, I remember being excited to watch Alan race in Kelowna when he first came to tri. He was…just another guy - this triathlon running at that level is something else. I think it’s insane for anyone to think that, for instance, Jakob Ingerbritsen (I know I effed that up lol) would be able to compete just because he’s an Olympic gold medalist runner.

The other way - Gwen was much better off the bike than she has been running.

Mary has a chance - who knows - if anyone can get it out of her it might be Paulo!

would like to also see Jordan Hasay take up try considering her recent injuries and mental burn outs. She is no ITU level swimmer, so perhaps long course racing she has a chance

Really excited for this! Obviously a huge talent. Training for Olympic & under, she doesn’t really need to run more than 40 miles/week. That should help her stay healthy. She also apparently was a good swimmer until high school, when she decided to go all-in on running. Interested to see how she does on the bike. In the two EDR races at Clermont this weekend. Chance to get her elite license if she finishes top-3.

Now I feel even worse about my swimming than I already felt…

I did 1:09 today off a push - but I haven’t beat my daughter since she was 10 lol

At 12 (humble brag) the best swim I did in Kona was most of the course pre race with my then 12 yo!!

Triathletes who were not competitive swimmers have no clue as to how slow they really are compared to “real” swimmers.

Example: a 5:15 scy 500 free last competitive year didn’t get you in the top 20 in the country…in 12 and under…girls.

Excited to see how she does

A quick search found her results at that low key sprint triathlon in Florida.

Just curious - how much was your daughter swimming per week typically at age 11-12 to hit those kinds of times?

By then she was 5-6 days a week and maybe two of those were doubles? Maybe one.

But I would say 25-35k a week depending on the week and time of year.
