My wife has a silicone “Livestrong-ish” wrist band with a marathon pace chart printed on it. It came from a company called GoalPace.com which seems to be out of business now. Does anyone know of another vendor that makes these things?
(I’m aware there are calculators and tools to print paper ones online, but I prefer to have silicone if possible so it will survive the swim/bike portion of a Tri.)
But, I write transition in/out times and some split times in sharpie on my arms because, while I actually like the math distraction (I used to use an analogue watch and house #'s along country roads to calculate bike splits) of keeping time, in a race I often can’t even remember where the buttons on my watch are.
The fourth discipline is multitasking, I guess, and I’ve not mastered it.
BTW, aren’t wristbands really small? How can you see 'em?
I use Google maps and use telephone poles, houses, or intersections for my splits as well. I use a digital watch though. I’m glad I’m not the only one.
At the Sacramento marathon they were handing out the temporary tattoos - works ok, probably better if you shave your arm! Pretty frickin hard to read the tiny numbers when sweating and running. Having the 2.50 tattoo didn’t get me across the line that fast though… aimed a little too high.
A while ago, I bought some waterproof paper . Pretty sure I got it at REI, but it shoudln’t be hard to find.
Don’t know if that fits your issues, but I’ve had very good luck with it for pace wristbands. I still cover it w/scotch tape, but i don’t worry about it bleeding, getting torn, etc.
If you want to consider an alternative, I print something that I tape to the underside of my visor. Advantages - I can make it bigger and include both mile splits - which I can then vary for early/middle/late stages of the race, course terrain, etc. - and cumulative time. Disadvantage - you have to take off your visor to see it.
You mean, Garmin hasn’t put the pace band/tatoo folks out of business yet?
Yeah, I don’t quite get this pace wristband thing. I’m doing a marathon this coming weekend with a very specific pace in mind. I will have my Garmin display my instantaneous speed and overall average pace (along with distance and time). Then the autolap will pop up and show me every mile split. I don’t see the need for a pace chart.
His sheets have a link to waterproof paper (http://waterproof-paper.com), and he has good instructions for using packing tape to cover as well. Waterproof paper with packing tape per Bob Loblaw’s suggestion would be pretty solid.
His sheets also mention (and will print out for) the “Nike Pace Band Holder” but from a few quick googles in the past, it seemed like those bands were only given out at race expos?
(No affiliation, just really like the Greg’s stuff)

Because the garmin only tells you the last mile. It does not tell you how far off you are compared to where you want to be at that point in the race. If I need to run 7:09 pace, yeah I can see that I’m ahead on this mile and behind on that mile. But doing that math gets tricky when it starts getting past one digit and your brain is oxygen deprived. Now put a non-flat course into the mix and things get a lot more complicated. A pace band lets you easily check at any mile split how close you are to your goal.
