I’m running the San Antonio marathon tomorrow and have been suffering from allergies this week and taking Claritin D. It’s supposed to be warm tomorrow (63 degrees at the start) and I’ve read that Claritin D can cause dehydration and elevated heart rate. I’ve never raced while using these meds.
If you were me, would you take the meds tomorrow or just suffer with congestion and headache? Any thoughts are much appreciated!
I “ran” NYC marathon last week and had the same allergy/congestion/headache issues. I had been taking Claritin D all week but only took regular Claritin the day of the race. Good luck!
I have run while taking Claritin-D with no bad affects, but everyone is different. If you haven’t tired it in training it probably isn’t a good idea during the race.
For me, running clears my sinuses, and a running nose, etc, is not a big deal out on the course.
Have you considered taking a 12 hour instead of the 24 the night before and then going “cold turkey” during the race?
From WADA: “Pseudoephedrine is prohibited when its concentration in urine is greater than 150 micrograms per milliliter”
If I read some of the background information right, you will likely only exceed this threshold if you take more than 180mg of regular dose (aka non-extended-release). Interesting, it was prohibited before WADA, went off the list in 2004,and went back on in 2010:
I’ve been taking D all week, have never taken regular. I have my answer though…took a quick 20 min run and felt wobbly and weird, hr in zone 5… I’m going to skip it tomorrow and just have a headache, I guess!
So you’re a cheat? I didn’t get your cleaver post.
But you’re still a cheat.
Are you really that stupid? My caffeine comment is just pointing out the fact that one stimulant is legal and another isn’t. What I’d like to see is consistency in the rules. Someone takes a cold medicine as get DQed while someone else is chugging Redbull all the way to the podium.
How do you get that I’m a cheat out of that? I hope you’re kidding. Because if you’re that dumb you probably should have access to a computer.
I do have access to a computer. Wow, and I’m stupid.
I was pointing out facts. You are spewing your opinion. The people who make the rules say caffeine is ok, and claritin-D is not. Either become someone who makes the rules or STFU. I have opinions on the rules. However, when someone asks about taking something before a race, I choose not to muddy the waters with my opinions and just give them facts.
As far as the cheat comment, think of it as poking sticks at monkeys…enjoy!!
Monkeys are know to throw poo at people who do that. You really aren’t that bright, are you?
If you’d READ the links I posted, he will NOT violate WADA rules if he takes the normal therapeutic dose of pseudophedrine. The article you posted was from 2002, when it was still banned completely. It was taken completely off the banned list in 2004, then put back on in 2010, but with a much higher threshold that still allows therapeutic use.
Now the wisdom of running a marathon whiles sick is another matter…
After further review, Mark you seem to be right on this. I thought the 12 hr pills would put you over the limit. When this was re-banned I was taking a alegra-D and read every study I could find. Came to the conclusion that I could take them during training, but not on race day. One study in particular said that the 12 hr pills would put you over the limit (150 micrograms) at approx. 4 hours, I can’t find that study now. But here are a couple others that support your original post.
And for you duffy, I’m a guy and your posts make more sense if you’re 12 touche!!
The WADA does recommend to stop taking pseudophedrine 24 hr before competition because of: “Large variability with high peak excretions possible at 6-20 hours post-ingestion. Seen mostly with long acting PSE”. That would be mainly of concern to anyone who gets regular in-competition testing. However for the rest of us, the thresholds are set to allow you to take normal doses.
