I did not foresee this course of action.

I haven’t seen the video, so I don’t know how intentional this was. Followed the other thread.

I am of two minds. As someone who still plays, and have had the odd weekend warrior dude get feisty. The sport has risk for significant injury. This includes potential for cheap shots. You assume those risks when you play, at any level. I have a hard time thinking someone consciously used their skate as a weapon.

That said, I can see how this level of charge is being used to set a precedent and enforce a new level of Zero Tolerance and instill fear moving forward to try and make someone think twice if/when playing dirty.

Let’s hope that’s not the case, someone shouldn’t have their life turned upside down and possibly be sent to prison, just to make an example out of them.

I’ve played hockey, had kids play hockey, and I have season tickets to the Islanders. I have watched that video over and, over I see no malicious intent.

Agree. I will be interested to see their evidence, process, and then the British legal burden this has to meet to get to this phase.

Haven’t seen the video, will not be watching the video.

So unable to comment on this.

“the crime of killing a human being without malice aforethought, or otherwise in circumstances not amounting to murder.”

I get where you are going, but this happened in England. A quick read of their law:

Manslaughter in English Law

The “Reckless or Criminal Negligence” is not present in that chain of event. He did nothing out of the ordinary for a hockey play in that situation.

I have a hard time thinking someone consciously used their skate as a weapon.

It’s enough of a stereotype that even the comedy movie Happy Gilmore. Jokes or not, there’s the possibility.

Saw the video, nothing really graphic, if you stop it at the hit. Also given the English laws, I am surprised this was charged.

The video doesn’t show any clear evidence of anything other than an on ice accident.

I’m a bit uneducated in hockey skate blades. Are they really that sharp?

Just for the sake of argument, could the guy sharpen his skates more than normal to cause an injury?

Just spitballing, not saying he did that.

The allegation is that the other player deliberately lifted his skate up, which resulted in the edge cutting the victim’s neck.

Yes they are that sharp. We had a guy in high school jacking around in the locker room and stepped back and sliced a kids foot open that already had his skates off.

No you can’t sharpen them “more”’ there are different depths you can sharpen the blade but they’re always going to be the sharpness.

This is such an insanely rare thing for someone to be hurt by a skate. Now everyone is paranoid for illogical reasons compared to say concussions or neck injuries. USA hockey sounds like they’ll be putting neck guard rules in place for next season because of it.

Just to clear it up. Skates are not sharpened like a knive, in a V the are sharpened inverse to that, A skate blade actually has 2 edges with a hallow in the middle.
hold graphic will help.

to be clear, though, this isn’t in court and nobody is guilty yet. the arrest facilitates questioning as part of the investigation.

I have a scar on my wrist that can attest to the sharpness of skates. 10 stiches or so.

It is also not the police who decide if to prosecute in England

I am wondering if there isn’t more to it in the events that lead up to the hit. Perhaps he was showing a willingness to try and hurt people. I have played against people like that and they have no business on the ice.

He apparently has a long record as a dirty player - most penalized in the entire league in 22-23. You also have to assume there’s at least a chance the police have better evidence than the grainy video on twitter.

There’s lots of hockey players on this and the other thread that seem satisfied this was an accident, and I’m loathe to dispute their experience, but I’m pretty convinced he threw his leg up to try to make some sort of contact.

This was kind of my thought. If there is some evidence that this player is known as violent/aggressive with prior attempts to maim, maybe even a pre-existing history with Johnson, that is only way I could see trying to make some sort of case. And even then, going to have to be pretty darn egregious to bypass league discipline and bring off ice criminal charges.
