Manhattan beach bike routes

Hello all,

Heading to so cal in a few weeks for spring break. Taking my road bike and hoping to get in some miles. Have done a little research on bikely.com but hard to know what roads are safe or not. I take it the bike path in MB is not for serious riding. Any suggestions? I will have a car so I can drive a bit to start a ride. Thanks in advance…

Bump>>>> A little help out there? Is the PCH safe to ride on? Any particular canyon roads better than others?

Thanks.

The bike path is fine, but tends to get crowded. I don’t mind it during my commute to work, but during the summer it is too busy to use during peak hours.

There are quite a few fun group rides in the area:

The pier ride, donut ride and kettle ride are all roady rides that are really good.

I spend a lot of time riding in Palos Verdes and there are quite a few good routes (PV Loop is a nice one)

You can take the bike path now in the winter to get to the good rides, summer is a no go. Head north and go up topanga canyon, latigo canyon, decker rd., and connect them inland for a nice lollypop loop. If you look at a map you can see what I mean, but those are all great rides. You can also just go north on PCH, not as nice, but after Malibu it gets to have a nice sholulder and pretty safe…

PV loop is awesome. Riding up the path to Santa Monica/Venice and then on the PCH and into the Canyons is great–good 60-80 mile rides.

the bike path is good if you go early as is PCH

Ditto the various PV rides. And you can do more or less climbing to suit your taste.

Even in winter I tend to stay off the bike path when heading to PV from here.

Holy crap, I was just about to post the same thread except to specifically ask for quieter routes.

I’m going back home (to MB) from college for spring break next week and was wondering about this. The beach path is crowded occasionally, and people tend to not look both ways when crossing over onto the beach so I’m always on the horns. PCH is not advisable. Palos Verdes is fun, but can be sketchy at times. Overall, it’s definitely not a bad place to ride.

Does anybody know of any traffic/car-free routes within an hour’s drive from MB, that is suitable for “time trial” efforts in aerobars? I want to go fast!
