Male Hyperthyroidism

Any one of the forum have this?

I went to the doctor with the following symptoms:
Nauseous, light headed, fast heart rate, tremor, anxiety and nervousness, increased sweating, weight loss and increased worry.

Turns out my blood pressure was a little hight and my reflexes were ramped up too.
My thyroxine level was 3 times above the upper limit of normal.

Just curious if anyone else has gone through this and what their course of action was?

I am on Beta Blockers for the next month until my Iondine test scheduled on April 20th.

I’m hypo, not hyper so I’ve not experienced this. I have researched the topic a fair bit though.

I wouldn’t want to be on Beta Blockers and attempt to train. Some complain that they can never get their heartrate up much.

One common procedure is to zap the thyroid completely and then take synthroid to keep things steady. Once you get the amount dialed in (it is very slow responding as in months), you’ll feel “normal”.

And I thought I was the only one. (me and George Bush apparently)
When I was in grade 12 and first year of university I started to have trouble. I could not put on weight. I could not concentrate. I had a very high heart rate. I would sweat all the time. Hot all the time. Trembling hands. This all made life tough especially for a 17-19 year old. My grades sucked. The concentration thing was the worst especially for a student.
I was diagnosed with a hyperthyroid and treated with some medication to bring levels down to normal. This only worked for a short period of time and if I remember correctly the side effects from the medication were potentially quite extreme. (this may have changed as it was a long time ago now)
When I was 19 I was treated with a radioactive solution which destroyed my thyroid gland and then was put on a daily supplement to bring my levels to normal (I now have a hypothyroid). I have been on that supplement for the past 20 years. Being reliant for medication on a daily basis is a pain in the ass but better than the alternative, at least for me (something you would need to consult a doctor on). I would be happy to discuss further and the resulting impact on my athletic endeavors if you want any more info.

Five years ago I was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease (hyper). I was treated with Methamazole for six or 8 months and my numbers came down and have stayed down ever since. I only do an annual physical now to check numbers.

Sully-I’m betting that your doc had a pretty thorough talk with you about the causes of hyperthyroidism and various courses of action. If you’ll google it, you’ll find descriptions of the symptoms-which you have a plethora of-short term treatment with beta blockers, long term radioactive iodine to eradicate some of the thyroid cells or surgery. You may eventually have to choose between them. Many folks find them self on thyroid replacement replacement therapy subsequently. You should do very well.
