Making your own gatorade?

I was wondering if anyone has made an acceptable gatorade like drink. I am just trying to get away from the HFCS and the dyes. So if anyone has a recipe I would love it! Oh, and by acceptable I mean that you actually drank it and made at least one other batch. Thanks!

I seem to recall seeing a recipe on the Crossfit.com website forum. Try doing a search over there.

YEP, I make my own Gatorade all the time. I pour water into my bottle, then almost a full scoop of Gatorade powder. SHAKE AND DRINK, bam.

This is a recipe the exercise physiologist at SCSU told me.
Make a batch of Kool-aid. Pour half the batch into another container of equal size/volume. Then fill it up with water (to bring the sweetness down a we bit). Then slowly add salt to each batch until when you taste it you can taste that something is different. But not super different. Cheap and easy to do I would say.

I hope that helps. I don’t know if kool-aid has hfcs or not, and I don’t know what kind of dyes you want to avoid.

Besides Gatorade powder, which does not have HFCS IIRC, I have added some salt to: diluted OJ; Kool Aid (sp?); diluted HiC and/or Hawaiin Punch (sp?); etc. Also, I often use iced tea instead of regular water with the powder for a little caffeine. David K

I haven’t made my own, but that is a great idea. It really is just electrolyte mix, sugar and water. I’ll look into it too - drinking all that dye all the time for years probably isn’t the best.

Okay i laughed out loud! Thanks for the help or at least the laugh!

glad I could help…

FYI, Gatorade does NOT have HFCS, but DOES have potassium, another much needed electrolyte…are you gonna put banana slices in your homemade concoction?

Can’t help ya, but I do have a wicked recipe for flat coke I’ll sell ya!

I use a store brand powdered drink mix, add water of course and then I add Morton Lite Salt Mixture which is a salt and potassium chloride blend. Seems to work great and got me through two years of training and racing in the heat of South Carolina.

Actually someone told me the pre-bottled gatorade has HCFS in it though the mixes do not (I haven’t checked myself I keep forgetting). I eat a mostly whole food type diet and I am under the impression that I will be getting an adequate amount of micro nutrients from my diet but I do want something to replace some of the electrolytes I loose while running/cycling. Plus I usually have a banana or two right after I get back home!

I do make my own whiskey!
Here is your drink if you don’t like the funny colors Gatorade has…

along the same lines does anyone know how to make gatorade into a ‘slush puppy’ (is this a Maine thing? it’s like iced coffee only fruit flavored). Those would be good on hot days.

At Costco on Sunday - every type of Gatorade sold (in bottles) had HFCS. David K

Thanks for the Morton Lite tip. David K

coconut water (not milk) + fruit juice (for flavor) + salt.

This doesn’t address the HFCS thing, but the other day I put a 20 oz bottle of Mtn Dew in my bottle and just took a couple of endurolytes – got me home feeling great.

I’ve been hanging on to this recipe for a while. I have not yet tried it, but I’ve almost run out of my current sports drink, so I’ll be mixing this up shortly. It is Asker Jeukendrup’s formula and it was published in Outisde Magazine. According to the article, Asker is a nutritionist, triathlete, and was a (may still be–I have no idea) Team Rabobank consultant. Apparently, this formula was used for years by Team Rabobank and Powerbar’s current line of drinks are based off of Jeukendrup’s work.

½ cup maltodextrin
6 ½ tsp fructose
¼-½ tsp table salt
Combine in one liter of water, shake, and serve

You will want to check to be sure, but hammer nutrition’s heed is like gatorade but has no dye at all and a light taste (using real, non-artificial flavors). I’ve found gatorade to be disgustingly sweet, personally, and heed is much better. I think it’s a superior drink. It is more expensive, but you can buy a tub for $20 which is good for 30+ mixes. IMO gatorade is really no better than soda. The regular stuff has a trivial addition of salt in it anyway.

yes but according to prevailing ST opinion, HEED tastes like ass…

IMO, if ass tastes like HEED, it’s not bad…I use the stuff all the time
