I have a 6 months old Quarq Elsa that I would like to use on a new bike which is equipped with a Shimano DuraAce 11 speed drivetrain. I understand that this can be done by changing out the chainrings on the Elsa. Has anybody done this and ended up with seamless shifting? What chainrings are you using? The alternative would be to sell the Elsa and switch to a different type of powermeter - I have to admit that I am intrigued by the Garmin Vector.
The 11s Shimano rings won’t fit on the Elsa. That being said, you will probably find shifting satisfactory with the current rings and an otherwise Shimano 11s setup.
Yep, I knew the Shimano rings would not fit (different bolt pattern). Quarq has a list of chainrings that apparently work with Shimano 11 speed. Working and working seamlessly may be two completely different things.

just sell me the Elsa and get a sram red 22 powermeter. it will work with the da 11 speed.

Tell me, what makes a crankset ‘11 speed’ ??
Rear derailleur & shifters are obvious, front derailleur I could see, but how is a crank different from 10 to 11?
I believe that the 11 speed chain is narrower so its possible that the teeth of the 10 speed crank would not fit, or at least fit well.
I have read this on another website.
“Pitch (link length) never changed from the standard 1/2”. It is only the width (sometimes said as “pin length”) that was changed from the 10spd 5.88mm to 5.5mm for the 11spd chain."
and this
“I am currently using the new X-Glide SRAM Red 10 speed chainrings with 11speed Dura Ace 9070 without any difficulty. In fact, they shift much more smoothly than the FSA Pro Road Dura Ace chainrings. It really has nothing to do with the power meter/spider anyhow. There is no excess noise or hesitation with these rings. The main problem in the past when Campy came out with 11 speed, was that the 10 speed spiders/rings were just slightly enough gapped (for 10 speed chain) that the more narrow 11 speed chain would slightly hesitate getting to the ramps of the big ring.”
I think I will go ahead and purchase the bike with 11 speed Shimano and try my Elsa. If it is not satisfactory, I can either try different chainrings or sell the Elsa.
I run an Elsa with 10s Q Rings with Campy 11s. Chain width isn’t a problem. It shifts fine. The only thing I had to do was use an 11s Campy FD rather than a 10s. The 10s FD sizing wasn’t right to shift the 11s chain from the small to the big ring at the front (the chain either overshot or jammed - it was impossible, even working with < 1/16 of a screw turn at a time, to index the 10s FD to make it work. 11s FD worked straight out of the box).
what is the length of your elsa?
.
The Elsa is a compact with 162.5 mm arms. I also have a 1-1/2 year old Quarq S975 compact with 170 mm arms which has not been used since I purchased the Elsa this past winter. Due to lower back issues I switched to the Elsa since it was available with short crank arms.
Oh, I didn’t know they made it that short. Anyway, I was looking for a 175 compact.
Good luck.
.
The Elsa, and perhaps the Red come in 162.5 mm. The shorter crank arms were a great relief for my problematic lower back. Made quite a difference as compared to my other Quarq which has 170 mm arms. BTW, I have been very happy with Quarq. Both cranks have been trouble free and gave very similar power readings.

Yeah. It’s a little ridiculous that the Riken isn’t available with shorter arms, since all the arms (Elsa, Riken, and Red) are the same SRAM carbon arms anyway.
Elsa and Red arms are hollow, Riken aren’t.
OP I’d say to just try your Elsa out with the 11s setup and see if it works for you. Not much to lose since you already have the Elsa and it’s used. The 11s chain is narrower so the 11s FD is narrower and the chainrings are closer together, but it’s not by much.
Elsa and Red arms are hollow, Riken aren’t.
Aha, ok that makes sense. Of course, that means it’d be even easier to make molds for shorter Riken arms…
Yep, that is what I plan on doing. Chances are good that the combo will be fine, and if not, then I either replace the chainrings or sell the Elsa.
I an using a compact Elsa with Praxisworks 52/36 rings on a Dura Ace 9070 11 speed drivetrain, 11-25 11 speed cassette. Perfect shifting.
Thanks. That is good to know. I will definitely consider Praxisworks if I find my current chainrings do not work.

The Riken arms are not actually the same as the Elsa and Red arms.

Ae you using di2? I just put a riken on my bike, using 50/34 praxis rings and the di2 caused too much flex in the praxis rings…had to go back to the SRAM red rings. I wonder if the praxis mid compacts might be less flexy though.
