Magnesium supplements and knee pain

Several years ago, I started taking magnesium supplements specifically after hard workouts on recommendation from my coach. I would take in 500-750mg. However, in the day or two after, I would experience knee pain. I thought at first it was simply the fact I don’t have any meniscus in my right knee and that taking Aleve or Advil would eliminate the pain. It did not seem to take away the pain. So I stopped taking magnesium and after a week or so, the pain subsided. Recently, I tried taking the supplements again. But after a few days of taking them, the pain reignited in my knees anytime during a run. So I have stopped taking the supplements again.

A little bit of background on me. I am a 51 yo male who had major reconstructive knee surgery 30 years ago. I was told 5 years ago by an orthopede I have no meniscus in that knee. I take glucosamine daily as well as other vitamin supplements. I also have a dynamic hip plate in my right side due to a bike accident.

For all the medical professionals and other interested parties out there, have there been any studies correlating magnesium and joint pain? Thanks.

A few weeks ago I went to a chiropractor about some knee pain I was having. Lluckily he said it was just tendonitis, but he recommended that I start taking Magnesium supplements (250 mg), along with eating 5 almonds, a tablespoon of olive oil, and eating a whole avacado each day. He said that the magnesium helps the joints and ligaments absorb nutrients better, and the good fats from the almots/olive oil/avacado will help restore the ligaments.

I’ve been following that regiment for 2 weeks now and my knees feel much better. I’ve also been taking horse-size tables of glucosamine (1500 mg) and condroitin (1200 mg) each day.
