Lump discovered under my armpit

ive gotten these before, sometimes you can get a cyst under your arm, can be the deodorant youre using. It might be an infection in your arm or pec muscles. get it looked at, but theres no use in worrying.

I had a doctor tell me one time how bad deodorant was to use. Yes! I do use it also. It is something about aluminum in it that can do strange things. I find myself getting rashes and burning at times if I make a change in brands. Maybe it is just me being over sensitive in the area, but maybe a switch of a more natural product might help. You see these types of products in health food stores and GNC stores etc…

In general (since there are always exceptions) the real bad lumps are painless. The tender ones are pretty common, are usually inflamed lymph nodes from an infection somewhere, and eventually settle down. You generally wouldn’t want to go biopsying all tender armpit nodes.

You don’t mention if you’re a guy or girl - I’m assuming you’re a guy, because it does make a difference.

thanks for all the feedback - yeah deke - i’m a guy

Just had a prod around the lump this morning and it’s no longer tender and feels quite hard to the touch. It’s not gotten any bigger, but neither has it got any smaller. It feels about the size of a peach stone.

I’m going to see my doc tomorrow and ask him to do a blood test, to see if that shows anything

well, this is no joke and I just went through a lump scare myself, which thankfully, turned out to be nothing (although I’m still paranoid about it to this day).

the only lump situation I had under my arm was literally from Cat Scratch Fever. Sounds unreal, but it happened to me. I had just got a new kitten and she would literally follow me everywhere and would even get in the bathtub with me. Well, one day in the tub she scratched me and soon thereafter my armpit was killing me and lumpy. I could hardly even swim in practice. So, I went the doc and he told me it was from my cat’s scratch.

this probably isn’t true for you–the cat scratch fever that is–but I also had a lump once in my neck that scared the shit out of me. Again, it was due to an infection of some sort.

So, just pray about it, and learn something from this. If you can start using natural deodorant or none at all. Eventually your body will adjust to this.

Deodorant scares me…it’s unnatural!

let us know, ok?

I’ve had the same symptoms you are currently having several times. The doctor said it was infected sweat glands. He explained that anti-perspirant basically closes-off your sweat glands which can sometimes cause them to become clogged and infected. I only use deodorant now, never anti-perspirant. Mine cleared up in a couple of weeks. Good luck!

sorry to hear that…

I had lumps removed from my arm a week after Ironman Florida and two weeks ago was diagnosed with Lymphoma (Non-hodgkins). Go see the doc, make sure you’re ok, you can never be too sure.

As for Escape from Florida (another post by Tom Z.) I won’t be toeing that line. Treatment began yesterday, but I’ll see all you sharkbaits at Alcatraz! (Qualified at Westchester, NY)

e
ps. I had lymphnodes removed when I was younger as well, and they couldn’t diagnose me. Sometimes these bitches come back, so LiveSTRONG!!!

Eganski,

Sorry to hear that. Were your lumps painful?

No problem LSD, i’m very positive and have a great support network.

My lumps were not painfull at all, in fact I wouldn’t even have known they were there if they weren’t visible on the skin.

Congratulations on IM Florida eganski. I’m just beginning my 26 week build-up for IM UK

This will be my 1st full IM, so am keeping my fingers crossed that this is nothing which will

interrupt my traiing !!!

didn’t you go to the doctor? what did they say???

Yes, I’ve been to the doc’s. he took a blood sample and told me to keep an eye on it and to come back in 14 days time. Thinks it might be an infection

Hi LSD,

Although I am a woman, maybe this will help you. Sore lymph nodes under my armpits were a sign of Chronic fatigue Syndrome for me. Even after I beat it, they became and become sore any time a relapse is threatened. It’s a classic sign of your body fighting off an infection, but don’t disregard Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as a cause also. I was a high functioning CFS-er and fixed mine homeopathically using recomendations from the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine by Murray and Pizzorno. I was still able to train at a certain level that led some dr.s to believe I didn’t have CFS. Check out the stmptoms for that and make your own conclusions. Good Luck!

It sounds like a simple epidermal cyst. They usually don’t totally go away, the fluid will drain and the cyst will deflate, but the walls remain thickened. It may return several times. If it becomes too hard, or painful it can be removed. Just have your GP look at it while it is inflamed.

They can be caused by a variety of things, blocked pores among them. Some people have a genetic predisposition with cysts. Antiperspirants have been blamed, but there are literally millions of people who never use antiperspirants their entire lives that get them.

In short, see your doctor…always a safe bet. Don’t be too tough and let it go, athletes have a bad habit of doing that.

Did Alice Cooper sing that song…“Cat Scratch Fever”??

I had this several weeks ago…too much pit goo blocks the pores resulting in a few bumps. Go lean on the pit goo. Good luck. I also would take the advice of CFS working out too much without the proper rest. You may be pushing too much in your 1/2 IM training. My push resulted in numb hands 5 years ago plus work related stress. Glad to see you went to the Doctor. Many of us don’t go.

The last two races I’ve raced I end up getting those sore lymph nodes that are slightly red. There are a few of them, and they seem to go away after a week or two…I’ve never had them before this race season (then again this is my first race season). I didn’t wear anything under my arms for the race or weeks after…any ideas what it could be?
