LT HR from HM ave?

It seems that most people here prefer LT pace rather than LT HR, but since I am pretty new to consistently running (5-6 x week), my pace at a given HR has been improving steadily. Also, I would like to use Friel’s zones that are based on LTHR.

I am 30 and my max HR while running is around 205 bpm. Using some online calculator, I estimated my LTHR to be 160 bpm and this is what I used for my zones for the last couple of months.

However, a couple of weeks ago, I ran fairly hard for an hour (though definitely not an all-out effort) and averaged 170 bpm and this past weekend I ran my first half marathon and ended up averaging 178 bpm.

If I am going to use Friel’s zones, which HR is most likely close to my LTHR?

If you use Friel’s zones - you should use his test to determine “LTHR”. I think he uses 30min all-out TT with average HR last 20 min. Don’t mix and match ways to test HR with different zones/systems. Also realize that everyone means something different when they refer to “LT”, “AT”, “threshold”, “Anaerobic”…also don’t mix spots - use a bike test for bike zones, a runtest for run zones…

I would think someone around here has a calculator of some sort for this. I know I have seen % values for 10K and 5K efforts that get you in the ball park.

Its also safe to say that your LTHR is definitely higher than 160, and probably higher than 178.
