Low maintenance ground cover - Mountains of PA

We put up a fence for our puppy, she’s worn down the ferns in a couple of areas and there was dirt from building the steps. Any ideas for low maintenance ground cover that I could plant in the fall? Grass would be a challenge as I can’t water for weeks, as I’d not be here.

We have more stones from when they dug, I could put them down. But looking for other mud management ideas.

I’d start by looking at native plants - generally pretty hardy and obviously accustomed to the area/climate. I would NOT recommend goutweed if it’s native to the area - that shit will take over your entire yard if it’s not controlled (which is a ton of work). Alternatively, give up on planting the area - border it with stones and fill the center w/ mulch and/or pavers/flagstone.

I’ve had success with pachysandra here, we have limestone soil and I’m not sure what your soil is like. It also will not tolerate being stepped on.

The ferns didn’t like the puppy.
