Love my P1 pedals but hate the cleats!

Is it just me or is anyone else missing their shimano cleats!! it almost makes me want to sell the pedals

Have you tried the zero float version?

they feel exactly the same to me to be honest.

What don’t you like about them?

They feel fine to me. My only complaint is that the pedal sometimes hangs at a bad angle and it is a little tougher to get a good angle to clip in. But, that really does not have a material effect except on rides with lots of stops with clip-out/clip-in.

I really feel zero difference between Shimano cleats and the Powertap cleats.

What don’t you like?

Are the P1 cleats compatible with Shimano pedals or some other brand (other than Wellgo)?

Same here, clipping in just takes a little more effort than my SPD SLs, but once in…

They do seem a little “soft” and prone to more wear than prior cleats, but this is just a sense, only had them about 2 weeks.

And seems to me you can get replacements from wellgo for pretty cheap?

what I don’t like is how slippery they are to walk in and when you do they wear 10 times faster. The least they could do is put the little non slip patches on the right spots

Has anyone actually tried to use the look cleats on these pedals? I know they say they dont work, but has anyone tried?

DCR did this in the early, pre-production tests. He said they clip in and work, but had a little more play.

I find that my P1s clip are much less intuitive to clip into than my prior Look-style pedals. On those prior pedals, it felt like the pedal would sort of guide the cleat into the right position, it was pretty intuitive to clip in. On the P1s, after a few weeks I still find it sort of fiddly, if my foot isn’t positioned precisely right it doesn’t clip in, but it also doesn’t slide into the correct place easily. So I have to position the foot in exactly the right spot and just push down, and then it works. This means that if I’m somewhere dicey, say at a stoplight on an uphill road, I don’t always nail the clip in the first time, instead end up sort of fumbling and getting it the second or third try. But it doesn’t sound like that’s what you’re describing.

The cleats definitely seem on the soft side, they’re getting a bit more trashed after just a few weeks than my old cleats were after much longer. But they don’t strike me as any more slippery or problematic in any other way.

As I posted in another thread, I had an issue where my (normal) cycling shoe flexed the cleats just enough that they wouldn’t engage with the P1 pedals. I was able to resolve that first with a washer between the cleat and shoe and now with shims that do the same thing. I still find that bizarre, because it was a non-issue with Look-style pedals and cleats on the same shoes (and I was able to replicate the same problem on another pair of shoes, so this was an issue on both Sidi and Specialized shoes). I sent Powertap an email about it a few weeks back, but they never acknowledged it. I also spoke to a guy at the hotline who gave me the telephone equivalent of a shrug.

Look Keo… unofficially.

I have. I’ve tried them with the zero-float keo cleats (red iirc) and I’d say they feel like a cleat with 3-5 degrees of float.

The black ones are zero float
.

I agree with you. I don’t clip in as easily and I wonder if they are smaller than shimano or it’s all in my head. I find Shimano pedals to be smoother and easier to deal with. I would probably sell for something crank based if I could get a good deal.

Same here. Don’t feel any difference.

OK, I can see those complaints and would concur. But they don’t bother me enough to switch to something different. Wellgo cleats (the ones PT uses) are available on the net for like $10-15.

surfNJmatt,

Sorry to hear you are dissatisfied with the cleats. We have a new version of the cleat that I would recommend giving a try. It is made from a different material that has lower moisture absorption, which may have impacted your ‘feel’ from time to time.

Thanks,

Justin - Do you have a link? Your site still only has the wellgo style that look the same as originals…

Yes, a link would be nice
Thanks
